Snail to the Whiting

"Will you walk a little faster?" sadi a whiting to a snail,
"There's a porpoise close behind us, and he's treading on
my tail.

Why should I care about a whiting
does a whiting have a tail?
Why doesn't the whiting question
the porpoise in detail?

See how eagerly the lobsters and the turtles all advance!
They are waiting on the shingle-- will you come and join
the dance?

Why should I join a dance
for fun; they want to see
me fail; The lobsters and the
turtles all dislike me

Will you, Wo'n't you, will you, wo'n't you, will you join
the dance?
Will you, Wo'n't you, will you, wo'n't you, wo'n't you join
the dance?

Why should I do such a silly
little thing; to dance in
a circle, who would think
of such a thing? A sin.

"You really have no notion how delightful it will be
When they take us up and throw us, with the lobsters out to
sea!"

I should want to be thrown--
a sin is something craven
I do not want to fly
And leave my little haven...

But the snail replied "Too far, too far!", and gave a look
of askance--
Said he thanked the whiting kindly, but he would not join
the dance.

I would not join the dance!
What kind of snail do you
think I am? I am proper
fitting, normal, and little too.

Would not, could not, would not, could not, would not join
the dance.
Would not, could not, would not, could not, could not join
the dance.

I would not! I really could--
but if everyone did what
everyone could-- how could
anything happen, nothing would...

"What matters it how far we go?" his scaly friend replied.
"There is shore, you know, upon the other side.

I don't wish to leave
my humble home without
warnings in advance; I have
things to do and things to doubt...

The further off from England the nearer is to France--
Then turn not pale, beloved snail, but come and join the
dance.

I told you once, I told you twice--
I will not join the dance.
No matter what you say to me,
I would not take the chance.

Will you, Wo'n't you, will you, wo'n't you, will you join
the dance?
Will you, Wo'n't you, will you, wo'n't you, wo'n't you join
the dance?
