QUOTE: The train goes hurrying through the night with a
swishing sound, like something being drawn swiftly through
water. Its diesel horn sounds like a cow bawling not far
away. The listener remembers the old time train whistle,
the old time train smell of coal smoke and tobacco,
the old time harshness of red upholstered seats with a
metal corner grip where a hand could steady a small person
walking through the aisle. The sound of the train, on a
rainy night, enhances one's sense of security. The thought
of its people, being borne swiftly toward some distance,
pleasant, and surely important destination, is oddly
soothing. ~ Rural Free: A Farmwife's Almanac of Country
Living
