Poem - "Soft Streak"

I've got a soft streak a mile wide.
Most folks will never see that side,
Never even break the ice.
Maybe once or twice
I've opened up the door.
Might only take one more
Icicle stabbed to my soul
Till I seal up the hole
That I don't even use.
I guess it wouldn't be news,
Nobody peers in there to see
What's really happening to me.
It's my fault I suppose,
Can't see past my own nose
Out into the void.
I've finally destroyed
The one thing I need right now.
But it'll never do somehow,
The grass is always greener,
The break is always cleaner.
As I mull over the words that she spoke,
Can't even remember just where it broke,
Or why or how.
I'm leaving now,
Don't wait up,
Because my cup
Is full indeed,
But don't let me mislead,
It ain't hope I'm drinkin',
But I ain't quite sinkin',
Not anymore.
I've been here before,
And this time I'll swim,
No matter how grim
The murky water looks.
I've still got my books
To help me get by.
I'll soon forget why
I ever abandoned isolation
To chance the void of desolation.
I may not be happy, but at least I'm content
Not knowing where that soft streak went.
