American Teenagers

I love it when the adults complain to me.
"Never grow up. You've got it so easy."
I just smile and nod, but inside, a voice screams.
What do they know? How can they know?
It's so hard to be a teenager. An American teenager.

I live in a world where sex, drugs, and violence are a
daily thing. No one takes them seriously,
unless 'something' happens to them.

I live in a world where the law is against me. I have no
rights, no say, no true freedoms.

I live in a world where a person's looks can get them
further than any grades in school. Yet, I am required to
sit in crammed building for hours, study worthless
information, and be subjected to cruel looks and words by
those who are dealing with identity problems as great as my
own.

I live in a world where girls must starve themselves to
look 'attractive.' Where guys must be able to benchpress a
certain amount and look a certain way. Otherwise, neither
sex is 'attractive' and is then subjected to cruel jokes
and torment.

I live in a world where my fellow teenagers are a mindless
mass, consumed with following those who they deam as 'cool'
and 'perfect', when these 'idols' really have more problems
than we do.

I live in a world where the neighborhoods aren't safe.
Where we can be gunned down in our own backyards. Where
brother betrays brother, sister betrays sister, all for the
sake of that paper dollar which makes the world go 'round.

I live in a world where the adults who expect me to live
moral, truthful, and satisfying lives, are being arrested
right and left for lies, theft, and adultry. Am I expected
to be better than those who have taught me?

I live in a world where nothing is what it seems. Where I
live in constant fear of being maimed or killed by people
in other countries who hate my country's greedy and self-
centered ways.

I live in a world where I am expected to correct these
wrongs. These are my and my fellow teenagers' jobs.

Do we have it easy? I don't think so.
