July 31, 2001 -- 30 vs 31 vs 28 (wtf?!) days
Ok, so I was counting the number of days until my next
birthday for my entry about birthdays for yesterday when
this crossed my mind: Why the HELL do months have
different numbers of days?!
Think about it. The calendar is a human invention, not
dictated by nature. I find no rhyme or reason to March
having 31 days and April only having 30. Wouldn't the goal
be to make it a uniform system of coordinating days? This
whole 30/31 thing just seems too arbitrary for my tastes.
Speaking of arbitrary and truly insane, what the HELL is
with February?! Twenty-eight days?! Now that is what's
really fuckin weird. Honestly, I just don't get it.
There are 365 days in a year (366 if you count leap years,
which are altogether another topic of stupidity, although I
understand the reasons why they did it, blah blah blah).
That means that 11 months should have 31 days, for a total
of 341, and then you have that one red-headed stepchild of
a month (February) where it has 24 days. It just makes
Then when you're a kid, you don't have those annoying
little songs. I still remember one from kindergarten "30
days have September, April, June, and November...all of the
rest have 31, except February that has 28! Hey, what about
leap year! Then in the leap year, it has 29!"
Kindergarten was about 14 years ago for me. I shouldn't be
remembering the propaganda they taught me in that grade!
I'll be seeking therapy shortly and since we live in such a
litigious society, I'll be suing my school.
