federal law prohibits tampering with smoke detectors

This morning around 8:30 A.M., my roommate and I were rudely
awakened by our smoke alarm going off. So we high-tailed it
outside only to discover that no one else was out there, to
which we said "What the fuck?"

We came back, and our eardrums were assaulted by yet another
blast from the alarm. At that point we concluded that ours
had gone defective. After much hassle, we were ultimately
exiled from our room by the unpleasant noise.

So we called security, and the lady who came to investigate
suspected a damaged and/or dirty smoke head. So she called
maintenance to send somebody up here to fix it. Well, when
he tried to fix it, the damn thing started going off again,
and so he simply removed the buzzer. Tomorrow, they will be
coming back to install a working part.

Apparently that's the second time this has happened in the
past week. We really don't get our money's worth in terms
of facilities. They owe me a few hours of sleep.

In other news, I went for my interview for the Balanced Man
Scholarship yesterday, and found out that I was in the right
place at the right time, but on the wrong day of the week.
So it was today, and it went pretty well. I have another
reception to go to on Tuesday, but it's scheduled for a time
slot that conflicts with a class. So I'm going to have to
work something out with the guys behind the scholarship.

So I worked for a little over an hour today, covering for a
co-worker who had an appointment to keep. I was standing at
the desk, when who should come up but my friend from my CS
class. She and her friend were working on a project for one
of their other classes. Apparently, they somehow ended up
enrolled in both the first- and third-semester courses, at
the same time. I thought this was odd, and inquired as to
why it was. Apparently they're exchange students, only here
for a semester. And I did find out my friend's nationality;
she's from Israel.

At any rate, it's a bit odd how we keep meeting up at places
around campus, especially when we only have one class and a
lab section together. It's almost like some sort of cosmic
influence, or maybe it's just random chance.

So now I can foresee very peculiar possibilities. Assuming
that things turn out as I really hope they do, and we end up
getting together or dating or whatever you want to call it,
what happens once the semester is up? It would be one hell
of a long-distance relationship, that's for sure. Granted,
this is all based on some totally unrealistic assumption, so
it's probably a moot point, seeing as there are probably ten
million variables that could cripple the assumption.

Still, I can't suppress the idea that things just might work
out really well, even if only for a short time. It would be
interesting, and would make for one extremely bizarre dating
history, compared to most people my age.

And it would strengthen my theory that for whatever reason,
be it karmic justice or just bad luck, I only end up getting
even quasi-involved with women who are unavailable for some
really unexpected reason.

Of course, I should probably worry first about establishing
a relationship, instead of wondering whether it would work
on an international scale.

This is Dave, signing off.
