Day 5 08/28/02

Well I got throught the first few days of the initiation
period. I only have the top arch done, the bottom arch
looks pretty good so...
I was so happy to get them in place after years of
waiting. The ONLY way I could afford these is because my
husband's insurance cover HALF for adult Ortho, unheard of
in modern times... so I jumped on it. At 33 and having to
come up with that and have two babies to is a feat so... I
am still not sure why no one thought that I may have needed
them, both my younger brother and sister had them.. Oh well
I guess I'll just get into the fun stuff..
Getting the brackets in place was no big deal, it was the
anchor bands that on on the molar that were 'fun'. They had
to re do one on each side so they fit exact. Which was very
exciting. Put them on, take them off, put them, on take
them off, put them on finialy with cement... PHEW Then
the archwire and I was done !!
Luckily I took some Motrin before I left for the
appointment, I sure needed it after.
The next day or so I was VERY uncomftorable.... I was
eating mashed potatoes, cottage cheese, pudding, peaches in
syrup, tuna sandwiches, anything mushy you don't have to
chew.
Well I knew that the inside of my mouth would get sore
from the brackets and back bands.. so I thought, well
rather that mask them with wax and be whimpy, I'd tough it
out for the first few days and get the hard stuff over with
first. Well, by day 3 I was back to the wax. At first I
put it all over the place, it looked like I was gearing up
for Halloween early. It was pretty bad. Now I am just
putting it on locations that are really irritating. Some of
the brackets on my "eye teeth" are not so pleasant but I
know after the teeth start to move towards the desired
location the irritation won't be so bad, they will just be
rubbing somewhere else.....
I have to brush very throughly twice a day or more and
make sure I floss daily to get all the junk out. The last
thing I want are more cavities. I have the "Roto Dent"
suggested toothbrush with these really great little
toothbrush attachments that really get in there.
I opted for the celar ones even though they were a little
bit more, (it works itself out in the payment to be no so
big of a deal) I didn't want to look like I was 13 and have
to get carded at the ABC liquor store or something... Plus
the fact that I sell Avon and am seeing other ladies and
meeting new people all the time. I wanted to still maintain
some level of confidence.
My husband, Eric is very excited for me, he knows that I
have always wanted to get braces and has been very
supportive for me. Has taken off work for the mandatory
tooth extraction appointment, the extra fillings that
needed to be taken care of and the pre-cleaning before the
brackets and all were in place. He had braces in high
school, but they were the "old" kind which went completly
around the tooth so he was interested to see how mine
turned out.
Well more on all this later I have to go get cleaned up
now !!
