German Washing Machines

On Monday night, I brought up my laundry before dinner, so
I could throw into the washing machine and hopefully have
it done before I went back downstairs. I say hopefully,
because the washing machines in Germany are a little
different from ours at home. In the States, the machines
simply wash the clothes. Here in Germany, they wash... and
wash... and wash, the clothes. So I knew it would take
longer than the 34 minutes it takes at the dorms at
college. But after two hours (dinner and a game of
Scrabble), it STILL wasn't done. Hmm. I figured I'd wait
upstairs to save myself a trip. As I sat down to read my
book, Jutta went over to check on the machine, because even
she was surprised that it was taking so long. She quickly
figured out what was wrong; even though we could hear it
whirring, it wasn't actually on, because I didn't close the
door completely. *sigh* Why does that always seem to
happen??? So I waited another hour, and then it was done.
