Ask a Minister
~ A place to find answers to gnawing spiritual questions ~

Question: "My question is this: Is being a bulimic less a sin
than being an alcoholic, drug addict, homosexual, etc.? If
not, why not? By this I mean that if a person with bulimia
should die because of their abuse to their bodies, Can they
still be saved Christians?"

Answer: "Thank you for your question. This I might say is
not a simple one to answer.

Let me begin by saying that it would seem unlikely that a
true child of God would be bound by such a thing as
bulimia. I happen to feel that it is more of a spiritual
and emotional thing than a physical problem. If a person
that professes Christ has this problem, he or she needs to
seek deliverance through prayer and fasting and find others
that will fast and pray with them. Christ came to set the
captive free (Luke 4:18).

The question regarding would a person go to hell if they
died due to bulimia , I cannot judge. It would seem that
that person would have little faith, if any, if they were
bound to this extent. He has made us conquerors through
Christ. We can overcome the world by our faith (1 John
5:4).

I would not go as far as to compare it to drug addiction
and alcoholism due to those being mind altering substances.
They do compare however, in that they have a spiritual
element and need a spiritual deliverance.

One thing I do know and have confidence in telling you is
that it does not bring glory to God to be bound by such a
disorder. It starts with a form of depression and a wrong
self image. No, we are not to worship ourselves, but we
must respect ourselves as God's creation.

God bless you and I hope I was able to shed some light on
the matter!"

OK SO MY SELF-ESTEEM JUST LOWERED BY A THOUSAND NOTCHES.
ALTHOUGH IF THIS PASTOR THINKS THAT I WOULDN'T GO TO HEAVEN
IF I DIE BEFORE I AM PERFECTLY HEALED, THEN HE IS A MORON.
BECAUSE I KNOW THAT TO GOD, ALL SINS ARE EQUAL. THERE IS
NOT A SCALE FROM FORGIVABLE TO DAMNABLE. WE WILL ALL BE
SINNERS WHEN WE DIE, BECUASE WE CAN NEVER BE SANCTIFIED IN
THIS LIFE. SO WHAT MAKES ME SO HORRIBLE?

OF COURSE, THE REASON I EVEN POSTED THIS ARTICLE IS BECAUSE
DEEP INSIDE, A TINY VOICE THINKS THIS GUY MIGHT BE RIGHT. I
AM LESS THAN HUMAN, AN ANIMAL. THAT IS HOW I FEEL TONIGHT.
WELL ALSO I JUST WATCHED GLADIATOR, AND THAT IS KIND OF A
SAD MOVIE. SO I AM FEELING SAD. HE WAS SO POWERFUL AND
BRAVE, THAT MAXIMUS. HE FOUGHT TIGERS, I FIGHT TWINKIES. HE
WON, I LOSE. HOW, HOW SAD.

A GOOD GLADIATOR QUOTE FOR YA:

"WHAT WE DO IN THIS LIFE, ECHOS IN ETERNITY."

THANK GOD THAT HE HAS WIPED MY SLATE CLEAN, AND THAT
HE "REMEMBERS MY SINS NO MORE." ALTHOUGH MY VICTORIES AND GOOD
DEEDS
MAY ECHO THROUGH ETERNITY, I AM SAVED FROM HAVING MY SHAME DO THE
SAME. WHAT IS THAT VERSE I AM THINKING OF... IT GOES SOMETHING LIKE
THIS:

"NOTHING DONE IN DARKNESS WILL BE KEPT HIDDEN, EVERYTHING
THAT IS DONE IN SECRET WILL BE MADE KNOWN... WORDS
WHISPERED IN SECRET WILL BE SHOUTED FROM THE
MOUNTAINTOPS" OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. A SCARY THOUGHT FOR THOSE WHO
HAVE REJECTED CHRIST.

KIND OF REMINDS ME OF THE TIME I SAW MY CO-WORKER DANCING
VERY VERY VERY FLAMBOYANTLY TO BRITNEY SPEAR'S MUSIC. HE
(THAT'S RIGHT, HE) WAS IN FRONT OF THESE BIG MIRRORS AND HE
WAS SO INTO IT! HE TOTALLY THOUGHT HE WAS THE ONLY ONE
THERE. I LAUGHED SO HARD! I HAD A HEARTY GUFFAW INDEED. BUT
I MYSELF AM GUILTY OF A LITTLE MIRROR DANCING HERE AND
THERE. IMAGINE, SOMEDAY IN HEAVEN THAT THERE WILL BE NO
NEED TO DANCE FOR MIRRORS, CUZ WE WON'T BE ASHAMED OF
ANYTHING! WE WILL KNOW SO MUCH THAT WE ARE LOVED, THAT WE
WON'T BE ABLE TO BE DOWN ON OURSELVES, EVEN IF WE'RE DOING
THE RUNNING-MAN ON THOSE FAMED STREETS OF GOLD. SO HARD TO
COMPREHEND. SOMEDAY THERE WILL BE NO SHAME FOR ME.
