We did start the fire

June 15th, 2002
Around noon.

I left my apartment and headed over to Kent's house where I
would pick up Kent and Robbie. I made a qucik stop and
filled the van up. After getting Kent and Robbie we flew
off to the practice space and ran through a set list and a
few extra songs. We loaded up all of our gear and pretty
soon we were off to Chapel Hill, NC.
On the way down we mostly listened to Ben Folds Five (since
they are from Chapel Hill and the rule!). We took one wrong
turn and ended up doing a big U around the Richmond area. A
half hour later we hit 95 south and we were on our way.
Half way to Chapel Hill, I put in a tape that I had not
heard in a long time. This was a tape of 100 special
effects (like the kind used in movies and what not).
Anyway, one after another we heard some dumb noises. Then a
little while later we heard the sound of a gun and a dog
barking and then more shooting and then the sound of a
scared dog. It was hilarious. Who needs that sound effect??
What kind of sick/GREAT movie would do this?!?! That sound
effect was titled "Brave Guard Dog."
A little while later we were in the Chapel Hill area where
we went into to eat at the Skylight Exchange. If you're
ever in that area, do yourself a favor and go eat there. It
rules! This is apparently where Ben Folds would come eat
before a show. Anyway, we met up with the other band
Poprocket at the club. We loaded in and were informed that
we were going on as the headline act that night. I did not
expect this, but it was fine with us. Then we started the
sound check. This is where the fun/insanity started. We
were sound checking to the song "Hanging On" and Kent
started yelling "FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!!" So we turned around
and noticed that there was a fire....and it was my amp!!!
So, we turned off the amp and I started freaking out. Jay
of Poprocket said I could use his amp, totally rad dude!
So, we set up his amp and I was on it trying to find a
sound that would work. After playing around a little bit we
found a decent sound, but I still missed the tones of my
own amp. Its a motherly thing I guess. Anyway, so we went
on and finished up the soundcheck. Then Poprocket went on
and did their soundcheck. While this was going on Robbie
and I went to eat at Pizza 3. I don't know why in the world
it was called Pizza 3, but it was funny because in Philly
there is a place called Pizza 4, and in Richmond there is a
Pizza (or as we now call it Pizza 1). Anyway, we got back
and watched Poprocket's set. They totally rule!
After that it was our turn to come on stage. There were a
few more people there when we got on, not a ton more, but a
very attentive crowd. We were rocking out and it was one of
the most fun times I've ever had on stage. At the end of
the set Kent totally tore his set apart (I think the club
owners and the sound guy were a little worried about their
stuff being broken). After Kent had finished knocking over
his kit and Robbie his bass stuff...we had a few seconds of
feed back and cut the show off. The guys in Poprocket liked
the show. I am glad they did because I like those guys a
lot and I am looking forward to working with them again.
Jay liked it so much that he bought us a round of shots
after we got off stage. We packed up and drove to where we
were staying. One of our friends, Djangoh Haskins. Over all
a totally rocking show, but as I was leaving I realized
that my amp had caught on fire! The guy who was running the
sound told us to just say that we were rocking a little too
hard. In any case that is the story of our trip to Chapel
Hill. It ruled! We can't go back there again. Hopefully
with working equpment and an answer to why there was a "3"
after the word "Pizza."
