Shoes

I used to work in a shoe store. Not just a regular shoe
store, but an old lady's shoe store. I felt kind of like Al
Bundy in a way.

One thing that most old ladies have in common, is that they
want things to last forever. Most of the time when their
shoes broke, they brought them in to be repaired.

I took many of the shoes to the shoe repair 3 stores down
from our store in the mall. That's where I met Brent.

I'm pretty sure I took shoes there for a good 8 months
before I actually started talking to him, but after awhile
we exchanged phone numbers and started hanging out.

Brent was cute and seemed nice, so I met up with him at his
place one night. That's when I found out that he threw
parties EVERY NITE. no lie... It was fun, because I knew
I'd always have someplace to go hang out when I was bored.

Well, weeks went by and Brent and I became pretty good
friends... and I was fitting in with his friends pretty
well. He had 2 roommates, Eric and Mitch.... but Mitch
worked in another town 4 days a week, so I didn't see much
of him.

Brent and I made out a few times. I knew by then that he
wasn't my type, but I kept hanging around. Brent made it
clear that he didnt' want a relationship by hitting on
other girls in front of me and things like that... which
was fine with me. I guess I just kept coming back because
I was lonely.

I quit my job at the shoe store, and kind of lost touch
with Brent. We called each other every once and a while
and talked a little when I happened to see him in the
mall.. but I dind't really go to his place much anymore.

Then one day, on mile 399 of a 400 mile trip.... the
transmission in my car went out, and I needed someone to
come get me. The only person I could get a hold of was
Brent. He said he'd come to get me... but it would cost me.

He brought a trailer to my lifeless car on the interstate
to load it up so I didn't have to call a tow. Mitch came
with him. When he stepped out of the truck, my jaw just
dropped. Mitch had changed from the shaggy haired grubby
construction worker I'd met once before to a clean cut
cutie in a really short amount of time.

It wasn't just that he'd gotten a hair cut that drew me to
him, but it was how he treated me that day.. Brent made fun
of me for my car dying and tried to piss me off the best he
could... while Mitch told me to ignore him and that
everything wasn't as bad as I thought.

We went back to their place, and hung out for awhile.... I
knew then that it was a good thing that I didn't stop
hangin out with Brent all together. I really liked Mitch.
