Communication With Your Child

. Be honest with your children.
Lying always causes more confusion, which in turn leads to
bigger problems.

2. Don't bring your frustrations home.
Your children may begin to feel that your anger and
negative feelings are aimed towards them.

3. Spend more time with your kids.
Use this as a bonding opportunity. Don't worry - you will
eventually find a job, but how many chances will you have
to spend quality time with your children?

4. Filter out important details.
You don't need to share every little fact with your child.
For example, if you were fired, your child may internalize
that and blame itself.

5. Provide hope.
Let your children know that you will not be unemployed
forever.

6. Use this time to gain perspective.
If you have been working 60-hour weeks or doing extensive
training, maybe this transition period will allow you to
reacquaint yourself with your spouse and your children.

7. Allow your children to become part of your job search.
If your child is old enough perhaps they can "role play"
with you and conduct mock interviews with you.

8. Consider your children's special needs.
This is especially important for jobs that require
relocation. Many children do not like the inconvenience of
moving and having to make new friends.

9. Do not send inconsistent messages to your children.
It is important not to contradict the orders given by
partners who share parenting responsibilities with you.

10. Try a bit of humor.
Children love to laugh and hearing them amused will make
everyone feel better.
