Spring!

It seems Spring is finally here! I looked at the weather
forecast for the week and it's sunny with highs 65-70 day
after day.

We're heading into May, one of the busiest times of the
year for anyone who has kids in school. Parents with
elementary school children (especially if they have several)
are busiest of all but we parents with older kids have our
share of events coming up too!

First, I'll go back and sumarize what's been going on for
the past couple of weeks. Let's see, we got a greenhouse
which John is setting up behind his shop. He has the floor
in and still needs to build shelves. I've gone ahead and
planted flats of cucumbers, green onions, and lettuce. I
still have all the flower seeds to plant. I've bought
tomato and pepper plants.

John mowed the front lawn and powerwashed the front porch
and sidewalks this afternoon. Two big play pots are on the
porch waiting for me to fill with flowers so if I have time
today, I'll go down to Gindhardt's Nursery on Peoria Road
and get those tomorrow.

We also washed the van but it hasn't been washed all winter
so it'll need to be washed again soon. I want to vacuum it
tomorrow.

Gavin is graduating from high school in June. He has a
couple of track meets left, there's the band-a-thon coming
up as well as the band concert and I'm not sure what else.

He's been in three, count 'em three! different newspapers
this week! On Wednesday, there was a photo of him at one of
the track meets in the Brownsville Times. On Thursday, his
humerous article on cartoons, written as part of the Young
Voices Team, was in the Albany Democrat-Herald, and on
Sunday his photograph and (partial) list of accomplishments
was printed as Student of the Month for the high school.

We saw Owen this week. He's taking 19 credit hours in
sophomore level classes --math, computer science, history,
and English--and earning all As and Bs. He's really grown
up a lot in the past year. It's a delight to see.

Jack says he'll be flying in for Gavin's graduation which is
Saturday, June 6th. He'll come in on Friday and leave
Monday. Since he'll be here for only a short time we
decided to throw Gavin a graduation party/BBQ that
afternoon. He's going on to take a brief vacation in Sante
Fe to visit friends then he'll go back to Baltimore to work.
In one of his recent e-mails to me he indicated he might
come back to West Coast soon. I would like that.

Hugh has also been busy. His short story in the high
school's literary magazine took third place and next
Saturday he's going to the prom! My *baby* is going to the
prom! Yes, he's 16 and almost 6 feet tall but he's the
youngest so he'll always be my *baby*. He's stuck with it!

Oh, and the cats! Sugar still spends most of his time
sleeping. He keeps looking for new spots. His newest is
outside the shop door. This is not one of his best choices.
Spice was belled to to prevent her from catching birds but
last week John found her triumphant in the backyard
surrounded by bird feathers! ARGG! I console myself with
the thought that she must be catching the dumb birds!
