Double-U Double-U One

What's that son? Yeah it's true... I'm a veteran from way
back. I've seen it all, most of it hasn't been pretty. You
see things in the trenches boy, things that you are never
the same after seeing. Yeah, I was there in March, the 46
feet of party sub in one day. Yup, and the 100 footlong
order two months ago. It's hell in here kids, most people
don't last three weeks. I'm one of the lucky ones. Just
last year we had a general go AWOL. One of the best, too.
Legend has it he was done in by some party bread. He just
left to deposit at the bank and never came back. Left the
commander-in-chief in quite a pickle. But, just between you
and me, that no-good prick deserved it. Anyways, some say
he died, some say he just kept on driving, but I know the
truth. He moved on. Tranferred to the navy. I was a general
too you know, once, a long time ago. But I knew the shock
syndrom would get to me too. So I domoted myself, first
lieutenant, then finally a grunt just like you. How do I
stand it, you ask? How can I see and do the things I do
here, then assimilate into the real world, make love to the
wife, play with the kids? I don't know. You just try and
keep your mind off it, not thinking about it when you're
not at work. Compartmentalize your life. Hope no one askes
about work, and if they do...my eyes just glaze over,
thinking of all the non-english-speaking asian mothers with
a laundry list of sandwiches to get; the stoned teenagers
argueing over cheese; the ass who wants the perfect amount
of lettuce; and son, it just beaks your heart... sorry,
this old man has been rambling on too long. I guess war
does that to ya.
