Holidays

John did come home early last night. He was only at work
for about half an hour. They expected the power to come
back on at about midnight but it'll take at least eight
hours for the water to go through the system and until that
happens they can't do anything. Tonight he'll probably be
working at getting out some of the dried paper pulp out of
the pipes and machinery. It's going to be a long, hard
job. He told me he may have to work some overtime which is
fine with him. With two boys at university and two more
right behind them, the extra money would be a blessing.

Gavin starts track practice on Monday and needs some clothes
and shoes so John said that, unless he's working, he'd bring
Gavin into town to do that and then pick up Owen in
Corvallis to bring him home for his haircut. He really
needs one!

And now, to the holidays! Today is Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday.
Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. Easter
will be early this year.

Today is also Abraham Lincoln's birthday. No one celebrates
it anymore except the the stores with sales but even those
are called President's Day sales. They've lumped poor
Lincoln with George Washington. I remember making
silhouette cutouts of Lincoln and little log cabins by
gluing sticks to half-pint sized empty milk cartons but my
boys didn't do that in elementary school and I'm certain
kids don't do it now. What a shame! February was such a
great month in school. It was Lincoln's birthday followed
by Saint Valentine's Day followed by Washington's birthday.
The kids still get to celebrate Saint Valentine's Day (which
they just call Valentine's Day) but not the President's
birthdays--that's on Monday and there won't even be school!
