Layoffs and attitude adjustment

Well, the previous entry was so fun, thought I'd write one
more.

So, the meeting was over and, at this point, the attitude
had changed in a big way. Now, no-one discussed stock
options except in jest. Most people, including myself, were
making what Mike, a coworker, termed as a "glide path"; a
plan to get out of the company and into a more stable
environment. (Little did I know, but later on, Mike and I
would become very good friends. It's really amazing how
sometimes you click with people and feel like you've known
them for years, yet it is much less than that.)

So, a month or 2 go by, no real word on what's happening,
just business as usual. During this time, Mike and I hang
out more and many beers are consumed. We both figure that
if things last for a year, it will only be by luck. The
attitude that develops is one of apathetic, hopeless
dumbfoundedness (to be exact). But, there's something
really liberating about knowing that you're screwed no
matter what happens so Mike and I were just along for the
ride.

At this point, I had set my sights on the big apple's
financial industry. I figured that it would be an easy
ticket if I could get on. So, started studying patterns,
design, the JDK API, and all of this other BS and went to a
recruiter to get another job. Had a couple of interviews
but nothing really panned out in those weeks and months.

... cont'd ...
