Details of Life

Today was about getting the details right. part numbers, multi-packs, sales, and odds and ends dominated my day. Which finish? What color? How much if I buy more than one? And what about shipping?

I often marvel at the speed and depth of choice in general life right now. I can still recall the days of classifieds, you know in the actual paper. Now it is massive online mega stores, vendors from all over the world and complex calculations about shipping times and duties. Still it makes everything replaceable, to some extent.

A few years back I had lived overseas and bought a carved teak table from another island. It was eventually damaged some years later by a freak moving accident. For the insurance payout I had to figure out its cost of replacement here in the U.S. I thought it likely impossible given I bought it in such a faraway place after if was already imported from a farther away place. But after not too much legwork I was able to find a importer to import one for me. That was an expensive table that I bought for a pittance when you got it over here. So much for one of a kind, it was nearly singular.

As I survey my life I am struck with the notion that I may be not unlike that table. Beautiful, special and well, almost singular. Honestly, that would brighten my day.
