My Life Thus Far

Dalby Water Wheel

It was a good day. It's felt long, and I'm tired, but it's been good. My throat wasn't quite as sore when I woke up this morning. The questionable white spots have given way to fiery red soreness with each swallow (but only when I swallow, not all the time). Nothing I can't handle. I wasn't going to let it ruin my day with Snookums.

Originally Snookums wanted to spend some time at Starbucks so he could work on a psychology test and I could work on my Practicing Happiness workbook, but it was such a gorgeous day, he decided to do his test later so we could get right outside. He suggested the hike I did with the kids in Belfair back in December. Theler Wetlands. I hadn't planned on going back until Spring (when all the flowers and trees are in bloom), but it's a lovely area even in winter. So many bird species and the wetlands themselves are cool. I enjoy walking along the boardwalks just above the tall grasses and mud. It's great. And I could tell Snookums enjoyed it, too.

After walking the wetlands loop (a little under 4 miles), we still had lots of daylight left. Up the highway a bit was Union, Washington and there was an old (but still operational) water wheel I wanted to see. Back in the 20's and 30's it was brought to the area by the Dalby family and helped produce electricity for the area until widespread/dependable electrical service was established in the 40's. Hard to believe it took that long, but it is pretty far out there, and it isn't a terribly populated location. Even today, only about 600 people live in Union and based on the informational sign at the water wheel, only 40 households existed back when the wheel was put in place. An interesting tid bit of history... and the wheelhouse itself looks like the quaintest fairy cottage... or where Snow White's Dwarves live. Dripping in vibrant green moss. Also another place I'd like to visit come spring.

I did something I would never do for anyone else. I let Sam borrow my car. My precious Fiona. This is Sam's first time coming home since they (Gen, Sam and the boys) moved to Hawaii in 2013. He asked if he could borrow one of our cars and after figuring out me and Jason's work schedules I came to the conclusion that we could spare one car for the weekend. After Sam came to my rescue in Waikiki, I figure I owe him the better car. Snookums' car is filthy. I think he's given up caring about it. Funny thing is, I'm not even worried about it. I trust Sam. Honestly, I trust him with Fiona slightly more than I do my own husband. Sad, but true.

I open tomorrow. Back to work. It's been a great 3 days off (minus the heinous sore throat, or the fact that I got nothing accomplished). I'm ready.
