Yesterday I had my jubilee party with elder Henry Crandall and elder Hayden Moeller. I read several of my poems from my coming book of poetry. It was like an improvised literary soirée. I liked it, yea, because the elders were highly interested why I was writing poetry in the spirit of the religious doctrine of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Personally, I am extremely fond of Religion, Theology, Theosophy, Linguistics, Philology and Philosophy. This branch of knowledge is the source of my poetical inspiration.
I do not simply write about Religion; if I did, it would be just like a rhymed or, at least, metered, philosophizing, a treatise, at best. I am trying to apply religious ideas to life, to show the weakness of a human being and might, horror, and power of the Almighty. I strive to study the History of Religion, and also different religious traditions of the World and apply them to my life and, in the end, write about my own spiritual experiences.
Many professional poets and editors reprimand me, saying, my poetry is too outdated and is written in the light of the traditions of the past centuries. Maybe. Even so, I agree with them. I am sure, I need to find my own voice and work my own style. I do not want to reject History completely; at the same time, I do wish to write in a more modern style.
Oh, yes. The elders and I had a wonderful time together. They gave me a Birthday card, beads, sang "Happy Birthday to you!" and we had some refreshments. It was great!
