My Life Thus Far
Oh, The Hypocrisy
I had a very positive day. As hard as I struggle to remain optimistic and happy in the face of depression, it's almost strange when it comes easily. And it did today. I can't think of even one instance of negative self-talk I indulged in today. Something inevitably rubs me the wrong way almost hourly (most days), and yet today I coped so well.
Originally I was scheduled to work 9am-1pm with a 1pm-4:30pm shift extension. I already knew they weren't going to use my extension due to payroll constraints, so I'd planned to go on a fairly decent hike as soon as I'd gotten off. I put my hiking boots in the car so I wouldn't have to go home. My plan was to hike the Gold Creek trail to Gold Mountain, and then take the Tin Mine trail as far as I could before I started losing daylight (since I'm not sure how long that particular trail is). Unfortunately, that well laid out plan wasn't to be.
Two hours before her shift (two hours before I was supposed to leave) Kaitlin called out. One of her kids is sick. So, they used my extension out of necessity. You'd think this would be reason enough to totally derail my day, but I didn't even mind. I was fine with it. Partly because I have the next two days off, and (probably more so than any other reason) partly because I knew Allison truly needed me to work. There was nobody else.
Customers were friendly, laid back, and calm. The atmosphere was very pleasant, something sorrowfully lacking during the holiday season. Which I find so sad. That's the time when everyone is supposed to be loving and kind to each other. Yet another reason I give up on holidays. Oh, the hypocrisy of it all. The time was going by so smoothly.
Even though I was fully accepting of staying until 4:30pm, I got to leave at 2:30pm! Lauren came in to cover the remainder of Kaitlin's shift and they couldn't afford to have us overlapping like that, so I got to go hiking after all! I did a shorter trail, but it was still much needed and appreciated time in nature.
There was a hike in my Urban Trails guide that I hadn't done solely because it was too short for a day hike. Only 1.4 miles. But when you only have about an hour of daylight left, that's perfect! So, I did the Big Tree trail just outside Seabeck Not only did I get to visit one of (if not the) biggest old growth, living trees in Kitsap County, I got to appreciate some old architecture in the form of bunkhouses and cabins built by the first mountaineers members in the area. There's some history to the area, and I appreciate that kind of thing greatly. I almost wish I could live in one of the old abandoned buildings. Although I'm sure it would be absolutely freezing!
Snookum is working a random graveyard shift tonight, so I must sleep alone. We'll see if that poses a problem. Sometimes it does, but I got so little sleep last night, I'm feeling like it shouldn't be too tough.
