My Life Thus Far

A Life Before Me

It was a challenge getting myself up and going this morning. All I really wanted to do was curl up under my warm blankets and watch a marathon. I'm so over this cold weather. It's been about a week of freezing to below freezing temperatures (and tonight it's snowing). I'm not cut out for this weather. I miss Hawaii. I think back to the day Gen and I were up on North Shore, walking along Turtle Beach and it started raining. I was so cold, wearing a thin cotton sundress and flip-flops. Yeah, no I wasn't. Now I'm sitting in front of a blazing fire wearing thick socks, yoga pants, a tank top, a sweatshirt and a fleece shawl and I'm legitimately freezing. I just can't get warm, and it's frustrating. I even cranked the heat up to 75 degrees. I'm sure Snookums is going to be thrilled about that (he hates it when the house is hot).

I did finally drag myself out of bed (obviously, if I'm sitting in front of the fire). The reason that finally got me moving was the thought of going thrift shopping for new sweaters. This cold snap has made me realize the lack of true sweaters in my wardrobe. I've got one. Everything else is just a thin cardigan I throw over tanks and blouses at work. I'm talking about thick, chunky, WARM sweaters. I've looked at some in stores and they're all $25 and up. Not necessarily bad, but I was kind of wanting some pieces with a little personality. A little history. A life before me. And I think I found that at Goodwill.

I started off in the women's section first. I don't know why, since in my head I'd already envisioned myself in oversized men's sweaters (kind of like I'd borrowed Snookums', except only one size too big, not the three sizes too big he actually is... and he doesn't wear sweaters because he's never cold). As I suspected, I didn't find anything appealing. Just a lot of cardigans and Christopher & Banks type sweater sets I'm definitely not old enough to appreciate. Nothing cozy. So, I did eventually end up in the men's department. Jackpot. I settled on three: a somewhat thin, but decadently fuzzy grey Calvin Klein V-neck, a extra chunky cable knit in dark charcoal with three matching buttons at the neckline (I can't remember the designer), and my personal favorite - a white with blue marling cable knit, 100% cotton, Navy issued sweater from the Quartermaster collection. It says NAVY across the right breast, but it's very subtle and since my dad and my husband are retired Navy, it's appropriate. They're in the dryer right now.

Being that I'm extremely dedicated to getting my steps in, and there's a Clear Creek trailhead right by Goodwill, I went ahead and took myself for a little walk. Well, originally it was going to be a little walk, but I ended up doing exactly 4 miles. I would have walked further, but it was getting dark and I needed to get home to pick up the kids. Because I told them we'd go get Santa pictures.

The mall is not nearly as busy as it's been in all the 10 years I've worked there. Santa had no line. We didn't like last Santa, but 2014 Santa had an hour long line. We were in and out in less than 20 minutes. Snookums came and hung out with us in center court for a bit and introduced the kids and I to some of his coworkers. It's nice seeing him enjoy his job for once. I hope that continues. Meanwhile I'm trying not to be slightly bitter than dad's job pays so much more than Snookums' does. And I'm also trying to be positive about the opportunities this job will afford dad in the future... but less face it, I'm a little bitter.
