My Life Thus Far

Batley Batworth

I've never asked my husband's family for money (even though they've got it in spades). I've never been one to depend on others when it comes to providing for my family (I make my own way)... but when Snookums' mom deposited $300 in our bank account yesterday, I was more thankful than I've been about anything in a long time. Snookums is working now, and will be getting paid next week (along with his monthly VA benefits, and GI Bill stipend). I get paid next week too, but that's next week. We had $120 in our bank account and I still hadn't gotten the kids' school supplies. I guess you could say I'd come to the end of my resourcefulness. This new job couldn't have come at a better time. I'm crossing every appendage on my body that my husband doesn't screw this up. I need time to get back on my feet financially. I need to pay down my credit cards and build my nest egg back up. I feel so unsteady financially. After clawing my way back from insurmountable credit card debt and bruised credit, I thought I was headed back there again. I didn't miss any payments during this rough time (if anything was getting paid, it was my credit cards and my car note), but I've been paying minimums, and that just won't fly for me any longer.

I spent the day doing the kids' back to school shopping. I didn't take them with me. I know that sounds mean, but I spend so much more money when they're with me. Money I didn't have today. It's nothing for me to drop $600-$700 total, so working with $300 was a challenge, but I got everything they need in the supplies department and a couple new pieces to get them through the first week. Kiki is going from wearing uniforms to regular clothes, and she has nothing except the summer clothes I bought her in June and pajamas. So when I do get paid I have to build her a full wardrobe. I did find her a cute pair of Asics (tennis shoes) at Ross for $12.99, such a good deal. Annie is always getting new clothes, so she didn't ask for anything. I got her a couple cute flannels I found at Ross ($15 for both of them). Keenan got uniforms and a pair of high top tennis shoes. He doesn't need for much.

I gotta give credit to Target for their back to school section this year. The organization was amazing. There wasn't a single thing on my lists that I had to find in another area of the store. It almost seemed like they only stocked what appeared on the actual school supply lists for the 3 districts in our area. I needed things like 3 subject college rule notebooks in black and purple, with poly covers and there they were. I didn't even know notebooks came in 3 subject. I only remember 1 and 5 subject notebooks.

Once I got all the supplies home, backpacks packed, and new clothes/shoes tried on, we still had a couple hours of daylight left, so I took Kiki and Keenan to Raab Park. It's across the street from the middle and high schools, and even though it's so close to home I've only been to it 3 times. Once a couple years ago, and a few days ago when the kids and I were looking for something closer than Battle Point. I'm not hating it. There's a walking path and a little nature trail. It's not much (I clocked 1,000 steps per lap), but it's something and less than 10 minutes from home. Not a 25 minute drive with ferry traffic.

Currently, I've got a member of the myotis family sleeping in my bathroom... that would be a bat. A little brown bat that looks like a fuzzy thumb. He's the cutest thing, but I can't stop wondering if his mama misses him. If she's worried about him. He doesn't seem to be very old. Kiki and Keenan were out walking Mischa and found the little bat baby on the ground at the end of our driveway. He can't fly and I suspect he might have a hurt wing. I know most people hear "bat" and automatically think RABIES!!!! But, it's not that easy to contract rabies and the odds this little dude has it are slim. Obviously I take precautions and have only handled him with a dish towel, but I'm not worried about contracting rabies.

Our plan is to call a professional in the morning. If he makes it through the night, of course (currently he's hanging upside down, sleeping in his shoebox). If no one is willing or able to help him, then we'll do our best to rehabilitate him and then release him back into the night. That's the plan. We'll see how it plays out.

The kids named him Batley Batworth Allen. Cute :)
