My Life Thus Far

Either I Do Well, Or I Don't

I woke up this morning to a text message from Helena (Snookums' stepmother). Since their visit last month (for Snookums' graduation) we've been talking more (via text message, neither of us are big on phone calls). Today's text was a continuation of the conversation we started yesterday. Basically about my husband's apparent inability to get a decent job and keep it. His continuous self-sabotage affects not just him, but our entire family. So, I woke up to that endless conversation this morning. I didn't let it get to me. I dressed and made it to work on time with my water, smoothies, and a green coffee drink (I found at Target on sale 3/$5. I've got to find a way to spend less money and obviously daily Starbucks is out). I felt prepared for the day and in good spirits, even if the day started with a less than favorable topic.

It took several hours for traffic to pick up. Sunday mornings usually start slow, but by 1pm it's generally pretty busy. Today it was closer to 2:30pm before traffic really picked up. I was supposed to be off at 2:30pm, but I had a shift extension and payroll hours are favorable, so I stayed until 4:30pm. It worked out well, because I was able to make some good sales in those extra two hours. Not that I care anymore. I kind of do, but half the time I don't even bother looking. It affects my moods too much. Either I do well, or I don't. My behaviors don't generally change too much either way.

After work I felt like paying Grocery Outlet a visit. I haven't been to one since 2003 or 2004. When Snookums and I first started living together, we were so broke I'd try any way I could to save money. I stopped going when I bought a new, unopened can of Kraft parmesan and it was entirely engulfed in mold when I opened it. So much of the stuff there was either expired or so close to it, it wasn't worth buying it. The risk of finding something so nasty again scared me away. But since going vegan, a lot of my friends post about the amazing vegan finds they get at Grocery Outlet. Since money is so tight right now, I decided to give it a shot... and I was pleasantly surprised. It kind of still looks like a dollar store version of a grocery store, but I was able to find fresh organic produce, natural products, even Amy's meals, Gardein products, name brands, I was impressed. I saved almost $90, spending $60 on what would have normally cost me $150 between Costco and Trader Joe's. This doesn't mean I won't be shopping at Costco or Trader Joe's anymore. I can't guarantee what I'll find at Grocery Outlet, but I'll definitely be supplementing what I buy with things from there. I got 12 mangoes for $4. That alone saves me so much!

I managed to make it to bed by 8pm, but it's almost midnight and I'm not asleep. I don't know why getting to bed is so hard for me. At least I don't have to get up early in the morning!
