My Life Thus Far

At Least The Salad Was Good

I've never been one to put much emphasis on birthdays. Maybe because my parents never really did (there never were parties, or masses of presents). As I get older, I find myself even more comfortable with not celebrating in any way... yet, for some reason I was excited about today. Maybe because we actually have money for me get a gift and not feel guilty about it. Usually (after all of the kids' birthdays in succession) there isn't anything left for me. Not this year. Snookums went all out.

The first stop we made was to a little boutique in downtown Poulsbo called Tickled Pink. A few weeks ago I saw some colorful Vera Bradley faux leather handbags there, and I wanted one so desperately (when I couldn't afford it). Funny how today (when I could afford it) they didn't look quite so appealing to me. I definitely didn't like her quilted versions at all. They remind me of something a grandma would sew for you. Not awful, but not my style either. There were other bags scattered around the store. A lot of Baggallini bags (very utilitarian, smartly designed, lots of storage... but not at all cute), some obviously leather ones (I can smell them from a mile away), and then a bunch by a brand called Louenhide. I'd never heard of them, so I googled. They do have some leather bags, but a lot of them aren't. The particular one I liked was made from "high quality materials", but no touting fancy leathers like the "genuine pebbled leather" or "ostrich" bags. It's a funny juxtaposition, googling in the hopes of finding out something is fake, as opposed to real. And while it is stylish and high quality, I'm slightly morning the loss of my beloved plaid backpack. It isn't he most stylish, but its impeccably functional and I'm so comfortable carrying it around. Snookums admitted he hates it, though. This was only the second time in our 12 year marriage he's admitted to not liking my bag enough to buy me a new one. Strangely, in both instances I was very comfortable with my purse situation... if only ugly plaid backpack came in black or grey. He probably would have been okay with that.

After that, we drove all the way to Southcenter Mall, because every store we could possibly want to go to is in that mall. It was another instance of having the money, but being totally able to talk myself out of things I really didn't need. All told, I ended up with 6 bath bombs and a big bottle of Veganese conditioner from LUSH, two lip sticks from Sephora (one of which I exchanged for one I bought yesterday, but didn't love the color), a hematite ankle bracelet, and Snookums bought me a beautiful band from Pandora. It's currently replacing my wedding set, because it's so modern and elegant. It's called the Forever ring, which is fitting. We got the kids a couple things, and Snookums got a hookah from Earthbound Trading Company. Probably on of our tamest shopping trips ever (when we had money to blow). I think we're being a little more responsible, because trying to make do when we don't have extra money sucks so bad, we're going to be a little smarter this time around, and make it last.

Snookums and I went on a late dinner date to The Loft. I wasn't impressed. I ordered a roasted veggie wrap with a side salad. First of all, I hate salad. Usually it's pretty boring, but there raspberry vinaigrette was amazing. That was the highlight of my meal. The wrap itself was bland. I think it probably weighed too heavily on the goat cheese I had them omit. At least the salad was good.

I'm ready to go to bed, but Snookums wants sex. I can't remember the last time we had sex, so I guess we're probably overdue. It's not like I've ever regretted doing it afterwards... So let me go do this real quick.
