Once We Got Up There

I ended up having a surprisingly great day! Not that I expected it not to be a good day, it was just better than I'd anticipated.
Snookums had class this morning, but not too long after I woke up and decided I needed to get out in nature I got a text from him asking what I had planned for the day. I didn't really have anything planned, but he suggested we go up to Port Angeles. That didn't seem like a bad idea to me. I always love Country Aire and being close to the Olympics.

For once, I was actually ready to go when Snookums got home (usually I'm only half ready, if even that much). We stopped for coffee at the little stand down the street, then headed over the bridge on our adventure. The weather was a little unsure of what it wanted to do. It was a heavy mist of rain going on, but for whatever reason I wasn't disappointed about it. Somehow I just kind of knew it would end up being a beautiful day, and it was.

We arrived in Port Angeles around lunch time. I suggested we stop at the New Day Café. I ate there last time I was in PA, and the roasted veggie and hummus sandwich was amazing. They had stuff on the menu Snookums would like, too. Well, today he didn't seem to think so. He settled on a Bahn Mi, but I'm not totally sure he dug it. We seemed a little enthusiastic about trying a slice of their key lime layer cake, but it wasn't to be. We sat and waited forever for the waitress to come check on us, but she never did. We finished eating, waited some more, and she never came to see if we wanted dessert. I was going to get the gluten free vegan carrot cake, but when she finally did come back, she already had the check printed out and just dropped it off. By that point Snookums was a little perturbed, so we just left.

It was then Snookums decided we should go up to Hurricane Ridge. We strolled around Country Aire for a bit, then headed up to the ridge. It was still overcast a little in PA, so I wasn't really sure what to expect once we got up there. The park ranger working the both (where you purchase your park pass) said that it was actually very sunny and beautiful up at the summit. So, that gave us some hope. Although I still would have enjoyed going just for the hike.

Once we reached the summit, it indeed was beautifully sunny. There were deer everywhere eating grass, and being totally ambivalent about all the tourists taking their picture. It was gorgeous. What made it even more fun, was that there's still huge piles of snow all over the place. Not enough to be a menace, but just enough that it made you well aware that just a few months ago it was still snowbound up there. We walked some of the trials around the visitor center, then headed to the Hurricane Hill trail. We only ended up doing half of it, because Snookums decided he wanted to make time to go see the Elwha river since we were in town. I got a ton of really great pictures, though.

The road going up to the Elwha river observation area was closed because of a washout. Even sadder, that was the same road taking you up to the Olympic Hot Springs, which was also not open because the bridge getting there was compromised. Apparently it was a rough winter on the Olympic National Forest. After that disappointment, we decided it was time to head home, anyway.

I hate when I get into arguments on Facebook. I hate that it bothers me when I get into arguments on Facebook. That happened tonight, and even though it didn't end with him unfriending or blocking me (at least, not yet), it still feels unsettling. I posted a video this morning done by JP Sears. He was making fun of vegans by switching the roles, and having meat eaters say the things vegans usually say. Even though it was making fun of vegans, it kind of did the opposite and made meat-eaters look foolish. That's why I reposted it. That's why it was posted in a vegan group to begin with. I even captioned that when I reposted it. And yet there was still that one guy who had to voice how he didn't like it, how animals were harmed because of it, how it was just gross (because there was meat in the video). I told him to keep scrolling. And that I didn't appreciate that he has never interacted with me before until now when he doesn't like something. We eventually ended the exchange, but I basically told him if he's just going to come around and critique what I post, then I won't keep him around. He didn't respond, but who knows what that could mean. I don't honestly care. It's not going to keep me up tonight... but this damn hip might, ugh.
