My Life Thus Far

I'm Not Doing It Anymore

I did it. I finished Ruby. I'm still trying to figure out why it was so tough for me to get through. I think it was the sheer amount of rape and violence. It was an incredibly well-written book, and I hope there's a sequel. I'd love to know what happens with Ruby and Ephram. Do they get married? Are they run out of town? Do they have any children (though I doubt it, since they're both in their mid-40's, and Ruby's had a very tough life).

Leave it to my coworkers to make me feel bad about having a day off. If one more of them had said "we have a visit on Wednesday" I was going to scream. I'm well aware. I know. I got it. The first 25 times. It's not even our DM. It's the manager of another store in the district. Around noon one of them called and left a message asking if I'd come in to work 2-6. Snookums and I had already discussed what we wanted to do with our day, and were just waiting for the kids to get home from school (they had a short day). The reality is, I'm not feeling particularly invested in the store, or helping it succeed on any level. I've overextended myself too many times over the years, and I'm done. I'm not doing it anymore. It gets me nowhere. I don't even feel particularly good about it. Like I do when I help a friend who needs something. It's not the same, and I'm done putting myself out there. I had plans. I didn't call back (which I feel slightly bad about), because I didn't want to give them the opportunity to talk me into it.

We made our weekly trip to Costco to get the kids' lunch items and my fruit. Having them with us reminded me of why we don't usually take them. They want EVERYTHING. They can easily add $100 to the bill. Snookums isn't much better, but he's a little easier to say no to. I stocked up on my usual. Mangoes, avocados, bananas, and coconut milk. I also got some Cara Cara oranges. I've never had them before (that I can remember), but I love them! They're a little sweeter and deeper orangish red than a regular orange. Looks like I'll be getting a little more vitamin C in my life. I've already eaten 3 today.

After putting our groceries away, we took a little road trip up to Fort Worden, since it was such a gorgeous day. Snookums dropped me off at the gate, and drove the kids down to the beach. I wanted to get a little walk in. I love the old officer's quarters and medical buildings. The architecture is beautiful. So are the views of the sound. I just love this area. As much as I love the idea of living in Hawaii, Washington is gorgeous, and this is my home.

I walked all the way down to the pier, then followed the beach around the bluff the lighthouse is on, then up the hill to the bunkers where Snookums and the kids were hanging out. They never get tired of looking through all of the old nooks and crannies. We've been to all 3 of the forts in the triangle guarding (well, that used to guard) Puget Sound. Fort Worden is my favorite. Fort Flagler is #2. Fort Casey reminds me of high school, and having a very unsuccessful sexual encounter with an old boyfriend (Paul) in the back seat of his cousin Steve's car. I think of it every time I go back. Not to mention the hell I lived through on Whidbey in general. I don't go there very often.

I'm going to try to get some sleep, since I really can't be late to work tomorrow. I don't want to go, but I'm going to try to keep the positivity going. It's been working the past couple weeks.
