My Life Thus Far
Gloriously Fantastic
I am SO. TIRED. I know I won't be staying up very late tonight. AND, I get to sleep in tomorrow, because I close! I'm feeling pretty awesome right now (minus getting kicked around by nature and being a little bit sore, but I'll get into that a little later).
Today is Easter. As you know, I don't celebrate Christian holidays (or Pagan holidays stolen by Christians, I should say) quite like others celebrate them. I did assemble the kids little gift bags of candy, bubbles, and included a sweet little poem for each child, but there are no baskets or eggs. We've moved away from that over the years, to the point now the kids don't expect it, and think egg hunts are annoying when you could just get the candy in a cute little gift bag. No work involved! There's also no huge Easter spread. Being vegan takes a lot of the emphasis off traditional foods. I'm not interested in spending $25 on a veggie roast to imitate meat, either.
I'm grateful for the day off with my family! As we do most holidays (so it seems), we went hiking! I got the brilliant idea to go back and finish the Dungeness Spit hike out to the lighthouse. I knew the kids would love walking on the beach. Keenan would love nothing more than to look at all the cool rocks, and climb the driftwood. It seemed like the perfect day for it, too. So, we packed up and headed out. Sequim is only about 45 minutes away, but the weather in Washington can be unpredictable to say the least. It was pretty sunny here and along the way, but you could see way off in the distance (as we got closer to our destination) that there might be a storm brewing. I wasn't too worried about it, because Sequim is in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains, and often gets missed by rain showers. That's what happened last time we went.
The hike started off well enough. It was a little windy, but nothing too serious. The sun continued to shine, and it was beautiful. It wasn't until around the 3 mile mark that things started to get a little hairy. Snookums and Keenan had walked ahead of me and the girls, and as the wind started to really kick up, and the tide came in a little more. I noticed that Keenan and Snookums were coming back. I guess up ahead the spit got super narrow because the wind was blowing the tide up over the driftwood. I don't think the trail ever totally goes under water, but with the cold wind blowing, and the wetness splashing us, it was pretty miserable. Even for me. So we turned back, deciding to come back when the weather wasn't being so fickle. Maybe when it's a little warmer.
I don't know how the boys stayed dry, but somehow all 3 of us girls managed to get soaking wet! I got overtaken by a big wave, tripped on a rock, and landed on my hands and knees in the sand. Kiki and Annie got hit by a big wave and fell all over each other (of course, I had to post that picture to Facebook)! By the end we were cold, wet, tired, and hungry, but the memories are priceless! It was such a great time. Honestly, it wasn't as unbearably uncomfortable as you'd think. Once you've acclimated to being wet, it's not so bad.
We drove home, ran into the house to wash up (I took a 10 minute bath in what can only be described as the most gloriously fantastic hot water I've ever felt. It was AMAZING), threw on some dry clothes, and headed to MOD Pizza for dinner. The kids love it there and I love that there feels like an endless amount of combinations for me. Few places around here have any real vegan options, and there's a worker there that knows I'm vegan and makes my pizza personally each time I come in. I love not feeling like a weirdo at least one place I go!
I'm going to sleep so good tonight. I can feel it. And I'm super stoked about not having to get up early in the morning. I know I said that already, but yeah. Super excited! I'm going to do some more reading, too. I don't think I can manage it tonight. Too sleepy.
