My Life Thus Far
Whatever That May Be
The past 24 hours have felt very... disrupted. Not in a terrible way. No, just out of the realm of normal. Whatever that may be. Last night's entry had to be written in Word and then imported, because our wifi wasn't working. This time it wasn't any fault of Snookums' (he paid the bill this month, or there would have been hell to pay. Pun not intended, but will be accepted). I was just getting ready to log on, when the fan Snookums must have on (for the air flow and the white noise) slowed way down. Like it had been turned off, then it started spinning faster again. It was strange. The lights didn't flicker, the TV didn't go off (Law and Order: SVU was playing in the background), just the fan stopped. And that's when our internet went down, too. Snookums tried to reset it, but it just wasn't cooperating. Of course, I waited until 1am to write, so I was tired and just wanted to get it over with. Yet another reason I need to work on myself about getting to bed earlier and starting the bedtime ritual sooner (writing is part of my bedtime routine. Getting the day's events off my chest... and mind). I don't want to feel like writing is a burden. Yet another item to check off the never-ending to do list. It's a joy and a relief to write. It soothes my weary mind. In an over-stimulating world, writing helps me let go. It's not a burden, unless I make myself believe it is.
It was no surprise when I woke up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, and the power was out. The wind was howling and you could hear small branches hitting the roof. Normally losing power makes me very agitated. It's been happening so often, and there's never really a good time for a power outage. Well, I guess today was as good a time as there ever could be. I actually wasn't too concerned about it, because I didn't have to get ready for work. I didn't need to shower or diffuse my hair, or apply precision straight liquid eyeliner in the dark, or make sure all my blacks match (oh how I hate wearing different shades of black clothes). After seeing the kids off to the bus stop (they had a two hour delay due to the outage), I threw on some yoga pants and hiking boots before setting off on an adventure. No winged liner required.
My only frustration the whole day was trying to find Gazzam Lake. My GPS kept telling me I was there, but I just wasn't seeing an entrance, or a parking lot. It kept telling me I'd arrived at my destination in the middle of the road, with no turn offs on either side. So, I used my own intuition and drove down a street wit a "no outlet" sign. Sure enough, at the end of the street was the park parking lot. Unfortunately it was totally flooded from last night's storm, and torrential rains had returned. Talk about disappointment. No matter how much I wanted to see Gazzam Lake, it wasn't enough to warrant hiking in a flood zone with crazy heavy rain beating down on me. I'll save it for Spring.
My default is always Port Townsend. Since I didn't get to do the hike on Bainbridge, I went to my safe place. I walked the downtown, stopped in Phoenix Rising for a book and some more incense, I got a cute kitty bag from Abracadabra (a reusable tote made out of recycled grain sacks), and I bought a couple muffins from Lehani's. The usual stuff, but it's always restorative.
Snookums had school this evening, Annie went to a friends' house (there's no school tomorrow, so she's spending the night). That left me and the little ones, so I figured we might as well make good use of the last few hours of daylight. I took them for a sunset hike at Fort Ward. They had such a good time! They got to explore the bunkers, walk the trails, they even got to see the ferry going to Seattle and then coming back. There were bald eagles flying overhead, seals being very loud, seagulls talking. It was quite entertaining! Such a nice end to the day.
