September 26th – Saturday
Fitful night sleep last night in Boyne City
Left there at 4:00 AM and of course got off in the darkest of dark, to get around to the other side of Lake Charlevoix in grey, grey fog to add to the complications. I had a tad more than a ¼ tank of gas and it I had any chance of finding a station open at that time, it would be in Charlevoix. On the way out there was one where I could get fuel at 2.49, which seemed pretty standard in all the vendors as I was coming up 31.
I filled the tank and got a coffee for a buck even, which was almost as good as McDonalds prices.
Drinking coffee in the Z car has always been a perplexing problem, as there is simply no place to set a cup when you have to shift gears other than squeezing between your legs, where something bad could easily happen, especially going to another gear. Fortunately I’ve never had too big a problem avoiding a calamity of that nature!
I turned left on M66 toward East Jordan and Mancelona where I could hook up with 131 Southbound. That was about 29 miles in total darkness at the time of day that all of Ma Nature’s critters are starting to move around, so extreme vigilance is the order of the day! The fog wasn’t helping things at all, so the bright’s were essential even in the fog which wasn’t too dense yet and didn’t get so until I got to 131 and started southward. I had gotten behind a big truck that kept a speed between 55 and 60, so I just let him carve a wake for me. Any attempt at passing would have been really foolish!
Sunrise came at 7:30, but as more of a foggy apparition, than a lighting of the sky! Heavy fog that wouldn’t burn off for another hour or so, when it finally did, it was still patchy in spots and didn’t clear fully until I was much further inland. I left 131 just past Cadillac and went west on M 55 to Manistee, thinking that was the shortest route home and by then, the visibility was much better and didn’t require the intense concentration of the earlier hours.
It was still early enough that getting through Manistee, which was the only big town to travel through on that route, with little problem.
I got home to Muskegon about 9:20 am, thoroughly bushed and groggy! I unloaded the Z car, toasted two English Muffins, had some coffee and went to bed!
I didn’t wake up until 3:30 in the afternoon, still a little groggy, but able to function and didn’t go out the rest of the day! I set up a John Wayne Breakfast Casserole and was in bed by 8:30 pm. And slept until my nightly bathroom summons at 2:30 and set the crock-pot on low so it would be ready by 7 and went back to bed. The damned adventure really wore me out!
