That Precedence to Maintain

Half an hour ago, I couldn't stop yawning. Now I'm not nearly that tired. I think I might be getting used to the time difference. Which is good, because I need to write. Nothing pressing. I just haven't missed a day since I started back up, and now I feel like I have that precedence to maintain.

This morning's activity consisted of driving to the other side of the island to Kaneohe to visit the Byodo-In Temple in Ahuimanu. This wasn't something I even knew I wanted to do or see, so I'm grateful to Gen for suggesting it. She knows I ascribe to the Buddhist philosophy, so it was really awesome to experience. Even if it was crawling with tourists. This is Hawaii... I was able ring the giant peace bell, then go inside, see the giant 9ft tall Buddha statue, light a stick of Nag Champa, and spend a few moments in meditation. Being that it was extremely distracting with the other worshipers/sightseers in there, I wasn't able to really setting into a deep meditation. Instead, I let the scent of my incense surround me, then I took a few moments to go where my mind took me. Surprise, surprise, I went home to Washington. Fort Worden to be exact. I'm still completely unsure why Fort Worden is the place my mind goes to when trying to power down, or release all other thoughts. It makes no sense to me, since I never have (and still don't) have any kind of significant emotional attachment to Fort Worden. I don't consider it my happy place, but I guess my brain does.

After leaving the temple, we came back to this side of the island. We grabbed lunch from the Peace Café (a totally vegan restaurant, that also serves lots of gluten free options as well). I can't even begin to explain how cool it is to go into a restaurant and be able to eat more things on the menu, than what I can't eat. So often I'm limited to one or two things, or I have to do a ton of modifying, but Honolulu/Oahu has so many dedicated vegan places. It's refreshing. Definitely something I'll miss when I get home. If Kitsap County had even one vegan restaurant, I would be surprised and delighted. Obviously I have some research to do.

We took our lunches to Moanalua Gardens, since the Peace Café is super tiny. Turns out, in the few weeks since Gen was there last, they've started charging admission, so while Gen went back to the car to get her wallet, the security guard responsible for enforcing this new rule. Long story short, he ended up asking me what my race was, AND (as if that wasn't enough), called me "high yellow", and antiquated slave term. I can't even escape it on vacation. It's so bizarre to me. Why do people do this to me? I'll never get it.

After lunch, we came home and I took a nap while Jasper was down for his. Nothing deep or long, but I did get to lay down. Yay! After getting up, Sam took me to a little whole in the wall Vietnamese join for Pho, while Gen went to her chorus thing a little early to prepare, then we came after her. We were late, and we didn't get to see all of her performance, but we saw a little, and it was great. It almost makes me wish I could sing. Almost, but not quite.

Now the sleepy has really hit me. I don't have much time until I need to be up (busy day planned), so I need to go to sleep. I'm so ready.
