My Life Thus Far

Rabid Scavengers

If I hadn't had 3 new message notifications in my inbox, I
probably would have forgotten to come write! I guess I'll
have to get back into the habit of making time each
evening to jot something down.

I worked a weird shift today. 11:15am-5:15pm. I never
understood those kinds of shifts. Why not 11am-5pm or
11:30am-5:30pm? I guess it doesn't matter. 6 hours is 6
hours. It was painfully slow. After holiday, then the
first few hectic days of Semi-Annual, I'd gotten used to
busy, busy days. Now it's going back to the way it is most
of the time. Quiet and slow. I spent most of my day doing
the things there's never time to do on a busier day. Like
nest all of the bras in the Biofit Demi launch pad (a
dresser with 40 drawers, a drawer for each size). It
picked up a little towards the end of my shift, but not
much.

After work I stopped at Safeway to find something to cook
for dinner (that wasn't frozen, since I forgot to ask
Snookie to take something out of the freezer). I was
hoping to find some interesting gluten-free item to fix
for the family. After almost a week of basic meat, starch,
vegetable meals I kind of want to find something
texturally/flavorfully intriguing to serve the family. I
did buy a gluten-free cookbook a few days ago from Helen's
Health Foods, but I can't seem to find the ingredients
needed to make the recipes successful (i.e. fancy flours,
rice pastas, additive-free spices). Tomorrow I'm going to
Central Market. So anyway, I ended up with meat (London
broil), potatoes (California new) and beans (wax). Sad. So
boring. At least to me. My family on the other hand acted
like a bunch of rabid scavengers, fighting over the last
bits of mashed potatoes.

I was very disappointed with Safeway's selection of gluten-
free products. If you could even call it that. They had a
few things here and there, scattered about the natural
foods section. They were mixed in with the whole grain and
organic items, which are very much NOT gluten-free.
Snookums said Fred Meyer has a better selection, which is
where I'll have to go when I don't want to drive all the
way to Poulsbo to go to Central Market. Another thing I
wasn't impressed with was the price. I found a small bag
of pancake/bread mix that would probably only make one
meal for my family, yet it cost $9.39. OMG! A box of
Bisquick is like, $2 at the Commissary!! A huge box! How
are we going to feed our family when it costs so much?!
Ideally we'd like to have the whole family go gluten-free,
but if we can't find more cost-effective options Keenan
will have to go it alone. I think I'll write a request and
see if I can get the Commissary to carry SOMETHING.
There's an Organic section, an Asian section, a Hispanic
section and even a German section. Can I get a little
something in the gluten-free department, please?
