My Life Thus Far
Everyone and Everything, All The Time
I'm exhausted. I just finished Annie's science project.
Yes, I said "I". Even after a lengthy discussion from her
teacher how her science project is her responsibility and
she's the one that's supposed to do it, it still fell back
on me. I tried to keep her on task these past few weeks,
but probably not as hard as I should have. I paid the
price for it procrastinating. Next year it's not happening
again! Although next year Snookums will be home to help
her and he actually likes doing science projects.
I had a great Mother's Day. For some reason, it felt like
people took the day far more seriously than last year. I
heard from all of my family (except my AWOL mother, but I
would keel over from shock if I heard from her), got
countless myspace messages, text messages and everywhere I
went today cashiers and associates wished me a Happy
Mother's Day as well. Maybe having three kids in tow has
something to do with it.
The brunch with the other Stennis wives went okay. It
wasn't as awkward as I'd anticipated. We had pleasant
conversation, all the kids got along well and the food was
good. I didn't eat much because I was too busy tending to
the kids and talking with the other wives, but it was
still nice.
After the brunch I stopped at the Commissary to get fruit
for Annie's project. Kiki shoplifted another push-pop (I
didn't find it until we got home, but I know that's where
she got it from) and since she was so busy pilfering
candy, she left Puppy there. She was devastated at
bedtime, so tomorrow I have to go back and see if he's
there. It's no big deal. I have to go back for my usual
Monday grocery shopping anyway. I'm sure someone found him
and put him in the lost and found or up at customer
service. I'm always telling her not to take Puppy into
stores just for that reason. I can't keep track of
everyone and everything, all the time.
Even on Mother's Day I still had housework and laundry to
do. Then Annie's fruit battery. I got the house clean, but
the laundry still needs my attention. I had to abandon it
because it was getting late in the day and the project
needed to be addressed... It failed miserably. We got
lemons, limes, grapefruits and oranges and none of them
registered any electrical current on the multimeter. I
don't know what we did wrong, but it was a total failure.
So, I went online and found a different project we could
do with such short notice. How much fluid can the sodium
polyacrylate in diapers hold? It's not going to win any
Pulitzers, but it's done and behind me. When I was a kid
we got to choose whether we did a science project or not.
The fair was optional. We either did a project or wrote a
report. I always opted for the report. I'm a writer at
heart. Annie asked me what kind of projects I did growing
up and when I told her I'd never done a science project
before. She was shocked. I shared with her a few of the
topics I did science reports on and she said the same
thing. She'd much rather do a report. That's my daughter.
It's not that I don't think science is important. I just
think there should be some free will involved. On top of
her being MADE to do the project, I'm being MADE to attend
the fair. I have to work, but I'll try to see if I can
give my shift away. I shouldn't have to do that, but the
powers that be in the Elementary world say I have to.
Tomorrow is another busy day. I'm off to bed now. Ciao.
