My Life Thus Far
A Fortuitous Bonus
I know it's rare for me to miss a night, but last night I
was busy. T'onna (a fellow Navy wife friend of mine) came
over and we had a little pizza party with the kids. She
doesn't have any, but she's working towards her teaching
degree, so being around kids is nothing new for her. It
was fun. After the kids went to bed we sat on the couch,
watched multiple episodes of Family Matters on Nick at
Nite and just chatted. We've got a few things in common
(other than just being Navy wives) and she's easy to talk
to. Before I knew it, it was 3:30am and she'd gotten here
at 7pm! As she was leaving, I thought about how nice it is
to have female friends. Snookums last big deployment I was
utterly alone and I think that contributed to my downfall.
I've always got Gen, but she's got her family and when
Sam's home, I don't feel right monopolizing her free time.
The husbands are home so little, you have to take what you
can get. We'll see each other more when he goes out to
sea, too. T'onna's husband leaves this week (he had duty
last night), so she's a little bummed.
Yesterday I only had one task I was determined to
complete... The grass. I haven't cut it since this time
last year (Helena and Snookums did it all the other
times), so in my mind I remembered how difficult it was to
deweed, cut and edge-trim 9 months pregnant in the heat.
To my surprise it wasn't nearly as weedy as before and
because I'm not 9 months pregnant and in a hell of a lot
better shape, it was easier. Much easier. It still took a
while (since I was working with a push mower and pruning
shears), but it wasn't as physically taxing and I actually
felt pretty great when it was done. My thighs are sore
today from all the squatting, but I consider that a
fortuitous bonus in my quest to get into shape :)
Today has been an even more beautiful day than it was
yesterday. It's warm, the sun is out in earnest and the
neighborhood is full of kids and families enjoying the
weather. It's very uplifting after months of grey, cold
and wet. I don't expect it to stay this way until Summer,
but it's a welcome respite, that's for sure.
Unfortunately, my task for the day is laundry. Which is a
very indoor activity. So, I haven't been working on it as
diligently as I should. My plan is to enjoy the day and
then knock it out when the sun goes down :) Why not? I
stay up until 5am most nights anyway. I might as well get
something done.
Communications are back up on the ship and I got a call
from my Snookums :) It's a good thing I'm a night owl,
because he's still not good with the time difference and
called at 2:30am. I had a feeling he'd call, but I wasn't
holding my breath. Last time they cut communications it
was for two weeks. I told him about his cousin dying (like
I suspected, he didn't really care) and all the other
things he's missed this past week. I'll be so glad when
this is over. We're almost to that half way mark. I got
the proofs for his deployment portrait in the mail last
week. He looks so cute :) That's always a sign deployment
is coming close to an end. It's kind of like they're in
school. We get portraits and cruise books (the Navy's
version of a year book).
Gen and Sam are on their way over (so much for not
monopolizing their free time). I hate that I'm always
calling them when I need help with something, but I would
hope Gen would do the same thing if she ever needed
anything when Sam is gone. Tomorrow housing starts
construction on my street. Their laying new gas lines
underneath the driveways and parking spaces, so the cars
have to be moved to the other side of the street. That
would be fine if the Impala's battery wasn't hopelessly
dead. I tried charging it with the girly little 12V
adapter thing, but that did no good. After two hours it
was obvious that wasn't going to accomplish anything. I
hope I don't need to buy a new battery, but if I do then I
do. It is what it is. I'm thinking of driving the Impala
more, but the RAV has a sunroof and heated seats. Oh how I
love a sunroof and heated seats...
I don't know if they've had dinner yet, I think we should
do something. I don't know if I'll write later, since I've
written now (5:42pm). We'll see. Ciao.
