A Momentous Occasion

*****

It's late. So late it's almost early (close to 3am). I
should be asleep, but tonight was such a momentous
occasion, I had more pressing things to do than sleep.
Like, celebrate the victory of my candidate :)

When I got up this morning, I debated over whether or not
I should go vote. I didn't know how long the lines would
be, or how well the little ones would tolerate waiting.
After mulling it over for a little while, I decided that I
really should exercise my right. After all, if you don't
let your voice be heard, others will speak on your behalf.
I'm the last person to allow that to happen.

Kitsap county (as are all counties in Washington, other
than King and Pierce) votes by mail-in ballots. So, the
polling place wasn't crowded at all. When I got there, I
was about 5th in line and it didn't take more than 30
minutes from the time I got there to the time I left. I'm
glad I decided to go. It was amazing to see the different
people there. We were all obviously from different walks
of life. Democracy is a wonderful thing.

I had an on-call shift tonight. I was hoping I wouldn't
have to work, so I could watch the election coverage, but
of course that didn't happen. I was going about my usual
duties when the phone rang. Since I was closest, I
answered it. I didn't recognize who it was at first, but
she knew who I was. It was my manager, Tamara. I didn't
recognize her because she was crying. All I could decipher
between her sobs was "Obama WON!" I was moved by how
emotional Tamara was. I had no idea she was even
interested in politics. This election captured the
attention of millions of Americans that previously had no
interest in politics (me included). During my break I
caught a couple minutes of Obama's acceptance speech at
the Direct TV kiosk. It was moving. I'm not an overly
emotional person, but it almost brought me to tears,
too :) I can't say for sure if Obama will make all the
changes he promised, but I do think he's definitely not
the same-old, same-old. I'm excited to see what happens
from here. 75 days until he assumes office. I can't say
I'm sad to see Bush go. Ciao.
