A MONUMENTAL Inconvenience

****

I had a great day. I was in a great mood, I got to hang
out with Gen, I got some things done, nothing frustrated
me. I was golden. Since it was 8:30pm, the girls were
already in bed and the day was almost over, I didn't think
anything would change that. Then my phone rang and now I'm
not in such a great mood :(

Amy, my babysitter (who happens to be 15 years old), got
caught smoking and as her punishment she can't babysit for
at least a week. Which means it could be longer. I can see
how this would be an effective punishment, but it's a
MONUMENTAL inconvenience for me. This is why I went
through the trouble of interviewing people and finding a
full-time sitter, so I wouldn't have to call around and
beg people to watch my kids so I could go to work. Now,
I'm screwed! Amy's aunt said if I couldn't find anyone to
watch them, she'd do it, but it feels weird. I don't know
her that well and when I call to speak with Amy, she
always wants to chat. She's old enough to be my mother, so
I feel like I should be respectful and chat, but I don't
really want to. Now I need her, so I'm glad I was nice to
her.

Gen and I had coffee today :) We really don't see enough
of each other. I miss the days when we used to have coffee
at least 3 times a week. Now we're lucky if it's 3 times a
month (and that's generous). Both of us have decided to
make a concerted effort to get together more often. I hate
to think about it, but I'm not going to live in Washington
forever. We have to make the most of whatever time I've
got left here.

Monday night means Girl Scouts. Have I mentioned that I
hate Girl Scout night? Well, tonight was no different. I
dropped Annie off and since it's in the heart of
Bremerton, it's a waste of gas and time to drive home. So,
I have to find something to do for the hour and a half
she's there. Tonight I decided to get the girls' Halloween
costumes and the candy for the trick-or-treaters. Wal-
mart's not too far away. Kiki picked out a Barbie princess
costume and I got Annie a Bratz pirate costume. There
wasn't that great of a selection, but since they closed
the Disney store in the mall, my options are limited. It
used to be our tradition that we'd go to the Disney store
every year to get the girls' costumes. It was an
outrageous waste of money (at least $100 for all the
crowns, wands and shoes that went along with the
costumes), but it made them happy and they always looked
cute. Now we have to resort to Wal-mart's flimsy
polyester/nylon monstrosities. Whatever. The girls' were
still happy. The upside of it was that I was able to get
over 500 pieces of candy, a bowl to put it in, their
costumes and pumpkin trick-or-treat buckets for less than
the price of what there costumes used to cost at the
Disney store ($75.53 to be precise). Wal-mart really does
save you money.

When I got back to the Methodist church (where Annie's
Girl Scout meetings are held) I had a few minutes to
spare. So, I parked in the church's driveway to wait. I'm
not parking in the parking lot anymore. It's too far away
from the entrance and I don't feel safe doing it. So,
whether they like it or not, I'm parking in the driveway.
Right in front of the door. Anyhow, I digress. As I was
sitting there waiting for them to finish, I noticed a
rather disheveled woman trying to open one of the side
doors and peeking into the windows. Then she started
walking towards me. She tapped on my window and I rolled
it down a little. She smiled at me and asked "are you here
for the meeting"? I was friendly and told her where to go
to get in, but she gave me the willies. WHY, WHY, WHY do
they have Girl Scouts and AA on the same night!? As bad as
it sounds, I almost want Annie to quit just so I don't
have to keep going there. Of course this is the one extra
curricular activity she's tried and actually likes.

I'm tired. I'm going to feed Keenan and go to bed. I'm
proud of myself. I was in bed by 12:30am last night, which
is a vast improvement compared to my usual 2-3am bedtime.
Ciao.
