My Own Personal Bailout Package

Arnold Schwarzenegger recently sent a notice to the
Secretary of Treasury, Henry Paulson, informing him that
he would be asking for 7 billion dollars in funds to
help "bail out" the state of California. I don't know
about you, but I am sick and tired of U.S. bailouts. Why
should I, as an American taxpayer, be required to foot the
bill for all of these bailouts? I work hard every week, I
meet my financial commitments on time and I do my best to
live within my means. Admittedly, it has been getting
increasingly more difficult and I fear that it is about to
get worse.

To that end, I decided to write Henry Paulson myself and
ask for my own "personal bailout package". The letter
below is loosely patterned after Governor Schwarzenegger's
letter and I used a lot of the same language. I am quite
sure that I will not get a response, but I am going to
send it out on Monday October 6th:

The Honorable Henry M. Paulson, Jr.
Secretary of Treasury
1500 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20220

Dear Mr. Secretary,

First of all, let me say that I am very distressed over
the emergency economic stabilization legislation that has
just been passed. This credit crisis is one of the worst
in our country痴 history and I do not feel the package
that was just passed is really in the best interest of the
American people. I have communicated this to every person
that I come in contact with and a vast majority of them
agree with me.

Like many other Americans, I am feeling the enormous
effects of this crisis in our economy. My economic
situation is dynamic and resilient, but also uniquely
sensitive to the national and international economic
conditions and fluctuations in the financial markets. The
current crisis has severely impacted my personal economic
situation, forcing my family to stop purchasing certain
goods and services on a regular basis. This has resulted
in less food in the house, fewer trips to the doctor and
lost spending value of my paycheck.

Most immediately, myself and a number of other of hard
working Americans are experiencing less spending power
from their paychecks firsthand. Many people have been
unable to secure the funds needed to properly feed and
clothe their own families. While some people may be able
to absorb the loss or obtain high interest financing
through private banks, I am not in a situation to do that
and my short term cash flow needs exceed the funds that
are needed to keep my family afloat.

In ten years, I have never missed a mortgage payment or
missed paying any of my other commitments on time.
However, with the high cost of gasoline and continued rise
in food and medical costs, I am certain that the time will
come for this to happen. With that in mind, as a valued
tax payer and a dedicated American, I would like to
request the sum of two-hundred fifty thousand dollars. The
money requested will pay off my mortgage and other bills
and will also allow me to have additional spending money
to make it through this difficult time.

Absent a clear resolution to this crisis might cause me to
fall into a worse situation where the possibility of
losing my home and not being able to sufficiently take
care of my family becomes a stark reality. I will continue
to do all I can to work this out, but your fulfillment of
this request would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Thomas X. XXXXX
Head of Household
