At the Horse Park

We happen to live in horse country and there is a horse
park only a few miles from our house, so this afternoon we
went to watch my son’s girlfriend practice polo. As anyone
who knows me can tell you, I’m not too fond of horses, but
it was pretty interesting.

It kind of reminded me of my son’s soccer game … except
they were on horses… and they used wooden mallets to hit
the ball… and the ball was much smaller… and the field was
huge... and there didn’t seem to be any discernible
positions. Okay, maybe it wasn’t like soccer, but it was
interesting nonetheless.

I did learn that in a polo game they play 6 seven minute
periods called “chuckers” and most of the players have at
least two horses that they switch in and out. Some of them
have more than that. Seven minute periods seem to be about
right because both horse and rider came off the field hot
and sweaty. Maybe we can catch one of her games soon.
