My Life Thus Far

I've Got My Instincts

*****

For the most part, my day went exactly as planned. Even
better than I'd hoped, with a slight amendment to the end
(change in dinner plans) and a little excitement
afterwards. It was great.

The girls had a great time at the Easter egg hunt. Annie
of course was very competitive, but I was just pleased to
see that Kiki understood the concept at all. Last year she
didn't get it. This year, she found a few eggs and put
them in her basket. All was going well until one broke
open and she was distracted by chocolate eggs. Then, she
stopped looking and started eating. I think she ate her
weight in chocolate today.

We left Holly Ridge a little after 12:30pm and went
straight to the mall for pictures. I was surprised there
wasn't a line, but I guess other parents didn't
procrastinate like I did. We were in and out in about half
an hour. Kiki is still a little wary of holiday
characters, but she didn't scream bloody murder like she
did with Santa. She at least sat next to the bunny. He
wasn't allowed to touch her, though. He had to remain a
safe distance away. 6 inches was optimal. I posted the
picture on my myspace, it's still cute :)

I'd planned on making Snookums a nice holiday dinner
tonight, so after the mall I swung by the Honeybaked Ham
store and bought a quarter ham. Then, I stopped by the
Commissary for fresh vegetables and the stuff I needed to
make the cornbread Snookums loves so much.

When we got home, Kiki went down for a nap and Annie
helped me clean up the house some. We picked up toys,
straightened up, repositioned the laundry (no, none of it
got done, but it did make it to the laundry room). I'll
see how I'm feeling tomorrow. We also got all the garbage
and recycling out, so Snookums won't have to think about
it tomorrow. I didn't want him to spend the little time he
had left at home doing chores. He was pleasantly surprised
when he came home and didn't see the usual post-duty
carnage.

Gen, Sam and Cyrus stopped by this afternoon. They brought
me a Macchiato, which was much appreciated :) I was
starting to hit that afternoon slump. They picked up a
playard for Cyrus I've been storing in the trunk of my car
(because I was too lazy to take it out after using it at
the beach last summer). Kiki doesn't need it anymore. She
just lifts it up and walks under it. She's too big and
strong for her age. Cyrus can use it, though. It was
perfect when Kiki was his age.

Just as Gen and fam were getting ready to leave, Snookums
pulled up. He'd wanted to surprise me, but I just kind of
knew he was coming home. Call it intuition. Not to mention
he told me yesterday he'd be home around 6pm. I know
things are always subject to change with the Navy, but
I've got my instincts. Snookums still wanted to go out to
dinner when he got home. Which was fine, because I hadn't
really started cooking yet. I'd put the cornbread in the
oven and had started prepping the vegetables, but that was
it. Snookums wanted to go to Red Lobster for dinner. Since
it didn't require me to do any cooking (and I was starting
to feel pretty tired), I said okay. I'll make the ham
dinner tomorrow. Early, before he has to report back to
the ship.

Both Snookums and I had steak and lobster for dinner. It
was great. I can't remember the last time I had a lobster
tail. Honestly, I haven't had one since we've been
together. It was a nice indulgence. We deserved it. We've
been so good with our money. We haven't touched Snookums
paycheck. We still had money in the bank left over from
before payday. That's a first for us. I'm thinking not
having debit cards has a lot to do with it. You have to
pre-plan every purchase with a trip to an ATM first.
That'll give anyone time to talk themselves out of
something. Not to mention, it puts a stop to a good number
of impulse purchases.

It was late when we got home. Exactly 9pm according to my
bathroom clock. We put the girls to bed and all seemed to
be fine. For a little while. Then, our neighbors dogs
started barking hysterically and Kiki started screaming.
One of the neighbors anti-social pit bulls dug under the
fence and was snarling and barking at Kiki, who was
looking out the window at it. Of course, our neighbors who
don't usually come out of the house, weren't home. So, my
Snookums in one of his more manly moments, wrangled the
dog back under the fence with Kiki's plastic tricycle (it
was a priceless combination of sexy manliness and
hilariousness), then blocked the hole with a piece of baby
gate we had left over from the gate on Kiki's door (the
section meant for a bigger door opening. It's hard to
explain). It's certainly not a permanent solution, but it
was enough to get Kiki to sleep in her bedroom. Now I
actually have a reason to hate my neighbors! I know they
say judge the owner, not the breed, but I'm not very
pleased about having two pit bulls living next door. I
have plans for my backyard this coming Spring and Summer.
They didn't include two fucking dogs that bark at anything
that moves. They are going to have to do something about
the fence, too. The sound of their dog snarling at Kiki
was enough to bring out my maternal instincts. I'm not
above killing one or both of their dogs if they even look
like they're about to hurt my children (in my yard, of
course. I've not a vigilante). I'd planned on putting a
little kiddy pool back there this Summer and my garden is
going to be back there. This isn't happening again. I'd
like to know why housing put not one, but two pit bulls
next door to small children. Not just Kiki, but the people
on the other side of them have a three-year-old. It's not
the best idea, if you ask me.

Okay, that's enough excitement for one night. I need to go
to bed now. Snookums went without me :( I guess that means
I get out of having sex tonight! Whoo hoo! Ciao until
tomorrow.
