My Life Thus Far
Instant Gratification Gardener
*****
I feel really great right now. Mainly because I just
finished gardening. I know that sounds like a very
domestically mundane thing to be doing, but honestly I
enjoy it. It's introverted (an isolated activity. I don't
have to be a team player), outside in the fresh air and
it's physically active. Everything I like (most of the
time). Annie, of course wanted to help, so I had her doing
the things that were just too uncomfortable for me to do.
Most of the bending and the chasing after of Kiki when she
wandered too far. It worked out well.
I spent a good portion of the morning in bed. I was so
worn out from yesterday's excursion that laying still and
not moving felt really good. But, by noon I started
feeling restless and wanted something to do. With it being
such a nice day, I thought now would be just as good a
time as any to take a trip to Wal-mart and see what they
had in the garden center. I like Wal-mart's garden center.
They have colorful plants at good prices and everything
else I need all in one place. No, I'm not advertising for
them. If Target had a garden center anywhere around here,
I'd probably like it better. As I was pulling into the
parking lot, I thought about how long it's been since I've
been in Wal-mart. That particular one, not in almost a
year. Anyhow, I looked at roses, which originally I'd
wanted to plant out front, but reading the back of the
bare root variety (the only kind they had) it looked like
they'd be a lot of work and right around the time I
couldn't give them a lot of attention (late May-June). So,
I settled for wildflower mix. Not nearly as nice as roses,
but I'll still have lots of pretty flowers for
arrangements in a couple months. I also planted pink and
royal blue Hyacinth (because their smell caught my
attention over all the other flowers) and an Alyssum
border. The Alyssum were in seed form, which I don't
usually like to use because I'm an instant gratification
gardener. I like to plant and see results, instead of
plant and wait 10 days to see the first signs of life.
But, that's what they had and I figured it would be fun
and rewarding to see them germinate. There are going to be
so many flowers in my front yard come this summer! I'm
looking forward to it.
I'm going to be getting a jump start on my vegetable
garden tomorrow, too. Maybe tonight if I'm still feeling
up to it, I don't know. I made my final decisions as to
what I want to plant and I got the little greenhouse to
start germinating the seeds. I'll keep them in the kitchen
under one of the under-cabinet lights until the night
temps are consistently over freezing. I intentionally
picked vegetables (and one fruit) that can be planted in
our zone in late April-early May. That way by the time the
baby comes, they'll be established and Annie can help me
keep them weeded and maintained. She's looking forward to
that. I got Green Ice lettuce, Green Goliath Broccoli,
Super Beefsteak tomatoes, Spacemaster cucumbers and
Cherokee Wax beans. All things we'll eat for sure. I'm
looking forward to summer when I'll have my own fresh
vegetables. Hopefully. If the spot I picked in the back
yard indeed gets as much sun as I think it will.
Zoe has her surgery tomorrow (she's being spayed) and I
have to take the food up out of her reach. She can't eat
after 8pm tonight. I made the mistake of looking up the
procedure online and now I feel guilty about it, but I
know it's best for her. I certainly don't want to end up
with a million kittens.
I need to go for now. In anticipation of the pain I know
I'm going to be in here pretty soon, I got some Eucalyptus
Spearmint Epsom salts at Wal-mart, too. I'll be taking a
nice hot bath here soon. Then I'll paint my fingernails
(and possibly toenails, we'll see) Berry Boucle, then go
to bed. Zoe has to be at the vet's by 7am. Yikes. Then
after that I've got to be at the lab by 8am, a doctor's
appointment at 9:50am, run some errands during the day
(new base stickers for the car and truck because we're
replacing their windshields) and then Kiki's appointment
at 2:15pm. Busy, busy day. Ciao :)
