Airpower Expeditionary Force, part 5

Besides the heat, the other thing that took some getting
used to was the wind storms. We were issued goggles and
scarves (I know that isn't the military term, but I can't
think of what they were called) before we left Moody AFB.
It didn't take long to figure out why. The wind could be
ferocious. With all the open space and nothing to slow it
down, the winds would send sand and debris through the air
at ultra high speeds. When the sand hit your skin it felt
like a thousand needles and it was impossible to even open
your eyes in a wind storm, much less see anything. The
goggles helped, but even then sight was limited.

On one occasion, we had worked on putting up a metal
building for another shop for two days and were confident
we would be able to finish putting it up the next day.
That night, the wind started to blow. When we got back to
the site the next morning the building had been completely
lifted off the ground and turned 90 degrees. It was still
in tact, but we had to disassemble it and start all over.
Talk about a morale crusher. It ended up taking us a week
to take it apart and put back up.
