My Life Thus Far

Life Is Good When You're Smiling...

****

"Life is good when you're smiling... and they call me
smile boy"! No, I haven't started putting quotes in my
entries again. No, I didn't make that up (I couldn't have
if I tried). The man behind me at the Safeway check out
said that to the quite befuddled cashier after she asked
him how his evening was. It stuck in my head and made me
laugh. So, I decided to share. More on why I was at
Safeway a little later.

I had a good day. I accidentally slept through Kiki's
speech therapy this morning, which made me a little mad at
myself. Until, I went downstairs and saw that she had
slept through it too. I wouldn't have wanted to wake the
poor baby up if she needed more sleep. Excuses, excuses.
I'll see to it she doesn't miss a day next week.

Work was good. It was unbelievably slow all day, so we had
to find other ways of filling our time. I restocked
fragrances, straightened tables. Anything but dust. Last
time I dusted my allergies acted up for a full week
afterwards. I can't take any of my prescriptions for it
and the over the counter stuff isn't worth the effort. So,
I just avoided the dusting. Time went by quickly, because
I was in a good mood and kept myself busy.

Snookums had just gotten home from picking up the girls
when I got home from work. We had a simple dinner and the
girls went to bed. I thought that was pretty much the end
of my day, until Zoe stumbled out from behind the couch.

She came and clawed her way into my lap and I started
petting her. I noticed that she had sticky spots in her
fur ( compliments of Kiki) and the white parts of her (her
chest, tummy and paws) were grungy and there was a film on
my hand from petting her. Dirtiness. She felt dirty. For a
cat, she isn't very clean. I don't know if it's because
she's young and doesn't take the time to groom herself
well or if she's getting into places Zeus is too big to
go, or too old to be interested in going. Zeus on the
other hand is immaculate. He's got the softest, shiniest
black coat I've ever seen on a black cat. He's constantly
grooming (I know this, because he coughs up a hairball at
least once a week). Helena has two pedigree Persian (flat
faced, ugly cats) that don't have the coat Zeus has
(Helena said that, not me). Anyway, I digress. So, I take
Zoe into the bathroom to give her a bath. I run warm water
in the sink, but a little kitty bubble bath in and
commence to washing her. Everything was fine until I saw a
little black speck in the water. Upon closer examination,
I see that the little black speck is moving. It was a
FLEA! I treated Zoe when we got her just as a precaution,
but no treatment is 100% and just last weekend her sister
came over and had a flea issue, too. So, you know me. If
you don't, go back and read the entries when Annie had
lice, September of 2006. It took 3 rounds to kill those
bastards. Mayonnaise was the only thing that worked. I'm
not above slathering my cat in mayonnaise if that's what
it takes. That whole situation still gives me goosebumps
to this day. My cats are no different. They're my little
furry children. That's why I was at Safeway. I bought
shampoo, spray, drops and a flea comb. I'm taking no
prisoners. Zeus I'm not so concerned about. He's been on a
monthly flea treatment since he ran out for the first time
a couple years ago and he isn't demonstrating any signs of
itching, so I just gave him another dose of his usual
meds. Zoe on the other hand, is marinating in flea spray
and when I'm done here I'll take the time to comb her from
head to toe, then she'll get a dose of the long lasting
stuff Zeus uses. Triple protection.

I'd better get to work. The fate of my kitten's coat is
counting on me. Ciao.
