A Bladder Infection?

***

I got through the day. At least that's something to be
grateful for. I've got a splitting headache, my child is
sicker than I thought and I really could use a stiff
drink, but other than that. I'm okay.

Work wasn't bad, but I can't call it one of my most
shining accomplishments, either. My mind was with Kiki,
who was in daycare being miserable. Because she didn't
have a fever, they didn't turn her away, but she was still
very sick. I felt guilty for leaving her there, but
sometimes a mother has to find a balance somewhere. I
spent an entire week with her trying to cure her of
whatever it was that ailed her, only do find out, there
was nothing I could do anyhow.

As I was gathering up my coat and purse on my way out of
work, I got a message from the daycare saying Kiki had
been crying unconsolably for over an hour. This is not how
Kiki behaves, so I knew something had to be REALLY wrong
with her. After I picked her and Annie up, I took her to
the emergency room and found out she had severe
dehydration, a viral illness and a bladder infection. How
on earth did she get a bladder infection? My poor baby is
very sick. I feel so bad for her. She had to have a chest
x-ray, blood drawn, a catheter placed in her bladder for a
specimen and a quart of IV solution to rehydrate her. We
were there for over 4 hours before they finally discharged
her with a 10 supply of antibiotics. There's nothing they
can do about the viral illness. I have to take her back to
pediatrics in a couple of days to see how she's
progressing. Why does this happen to my baby? What did she
ever do to anyone?

Because Kiki's got sores in her mouth that make eating and
drinking painful, her doctor suggested I give her whatever
she wants, anything that might coax her into eating or
drinking, at least until her mouth heals, so I got her her
one true love, McDonald's french fries. I even donated $1
to the Ronald McDonald house charity in her name. Because,
I know Kiki would have done that if she understood. Now
she's in bed, fussing a little bit, but I can tell she'll
be asleep soon.

As you can see, my entire day revolved around Kiki, but I
do have to mention how good Annie was at the hospital. She
was calm and helpful and very good. Her curiosity kind of
got the better of her at times, but for the most part she
stayed out of the way and kept quiet. I'm proud of her.
FINALLY, she's growing up!

Well, my bed beckons. I need to get some sleep. I didn't
sleep so soundly last night. I was too busy tossing and
turning, worrying about how today would go. Thank goodness
it's over. Ciao.
