Eight Worldly Preoccupations

***

"Our intention should not be spoiled by the eight worldly
preoccupations: gain or loss, pleasure or pain, praise or
criticism, and fame or infamy."

There's only eight worldly proccupations? I could have
sworn there was at least twenty!

TLC (The Learning Channel) is terribly addictive and now
my entire day is gone because I've watched program after
program about people with extra appendages, weird objects
impaled in their bodies, meth addicts with extreme dental
decay and macho men spending 40 days in a monastery. The
programming is so engaging, I hardly noticed the entire
day passing before me. I did get my laundry washed, but it
isn't put away. The house is in a shambles and I'm tired
because it's getting late. I'm just going to go to bed. I
don't have to work tomorrow, so I'll come home after the
gym and get it finished when I'm alone and have more time.
I hate a messy house, but I'm not going to stay up half
the night getting it done. I'll set the timer tonight for
30 minutes and pick the place up, but the heavy-duty
cleaning and laundry will have to wait until tomorrow.

Snookums called me about 6 times today. This underway
period, he got a break from ship life and was given a
beach detachment. Basically, he'll be a duty driver
helping shuttle sailors back and forth from the airport to
base and he'll help sailors new to the base find their way
around. I'm happy for him that he was given such a cushy
job while the rest of his division does their navigation
thing in the middle of the ocean, but I can't help but
wonder why they didn't give the job to someone who's
actually been stationed in San Diego, since the Stennis is
originally from San Diego and 75% of the crew came up to
Washington on it in 2004. Snookums is happy, so I suppose
that's all that really matters.

I think Kiki might be coming down with something for the
first time since June. I can't complain. Considering she
was getting sick just about every week from January to
June, I've really appreciated this lull in the illness
cycle she's been going through. Yesterday evening I
noticed her left eye was looking a little irritated. I
didn't think much of it. Gen said she'd fallen on the
floor and might have gotten a cat hair in it, which is
quite possible, but when Kiki woke up from her nap today,
I noticed her other eye was starting to look a little
puffy, too. I don't know. I'll see what she looks like
tomorrow morning. Please don't let it be pinky eye! She
isn't rubbing them or acting cranky, so I hope this
resolves itself by morning.

I think I'll sign off for now. I am tired and my bed is
calling me. Screw straightening up. Who do I have to
impress? I'll clean tomorrow. I have to. I'll go insane in
this messy house! Ciao.
