My Life Thus Far

"A limit to the size of the family is desirable. We have
to take care of birth control. It is very, very essential
to have fewer children, and those children must be
properly taken care of. Besides education, one must
introduce to them the reverence for life and the value of
human affection."

Amen (do Buddhist say that?) After spending the entire day
immersed in my children, I totally agree with this wisdom.
Three is my limit. I don't think I have the patience for
more than that. Kiki is testing that patience more and
more every day.

Speaking of Kiki, she had a major milestone in her life
today. We took down the play yard. Now that she's bigger,
stronger and more sure on her feet, she's just been
pushing the big pen all around the house. Getting into the
very things that we were trying to keep her out of. So,
instead of fighting her on it, we simply gave in and took
it down. The surprising thing is, now that she's got free
reign, she doesn't get into anything now. She'll just sit
on the rug and play with her toys. It's amazing! Not only
is she happier, so are we and we got 18 square feet of our
living room back! No more humungous octagon floating in
the middle of the room.

I spent my day playing Suzie Homemaker. I don't know what
provocked it, but I woke up with the urge to cook. Weird,
huh? In particular I wanted cornbread. Pinto beans and
cornbread, but Snookums (being as white as he is) doesn't
like pinto beans, so I settled on vegetable soup. I went
shopping at Safeway to get all of the needed ingredients.
Due to my dietary restrictions, I had to make the
cornbread from SCRATCH. SCRATCH, I don't think I've ever
made anything that didn't come at least part ways out of a
box, bag, can, jar, or vacuum sealed container. I know
how, my Mother did put me through the boredom of watching
her cook. So, I CAN. I just choose not to. Until now.

So, this soup was a monumental task, taking 3 hours to
complete. The ingredient list was HUGE!

Pinto beans (I was bound and determined to get them!)
Pearl barley
onions
celery
carrots
white potatoes
yellow summer squash
zucchini
bok choy
corn
green beans
green onion
AND
certified organic, vegan vegetable stock

Despite the length of the ingredient list, it actually
turned out really great and had a wonderful richness and
robustness you wouldn't expect a 100% vegetable soup to
have. Even Snookums and Annie liked it (Kiki like
everything). The cornbread was good, even though it had
no butter, milk or eggs in it. Just soy milk, corn meal,
flour, baking soda, baking powder and vinegar. It wasn't
exactly like I remember it as a child (because it wasn't
sweet, but I can adjust that next time I make it), it was
good none-the-less. I feel like I ate too much, which is
causing a little guilt, but considering I gorged myself on
vegetables, I'm not going to worry myself about it too
much. I had my fill. Which, proves you don't have to
starve yourself just because you don't eat meat!

Unfortunately, there really isn't much else to say about
my day. I cooked. That's it. It was a nice day, it would
have been better had I not let guilt slip in on me, but
I'll bash it back down where it belongs! Ciao and have a
great night.
