My Life Thus Far

Louisiana, My Homeland

I dropped another pound this morning (down to 204!!). I'm
giving up on trying to keep off the scale. If I'm not
going to have any will power, at least it's over the scale
and not food, anymore. But better than having a smaller
number on the scale, I feel better. I can move freely and
more gracefully. Before, I felt like I was wearing too
many layers of winter clothing, I felt bulky and
restricted in my own body. Now I'm fluid and free, like a
light cotton summer dress. I thank Pilates for this,
because I've only lost 14 pounds, and who would have
though at 204 pounds I could still feel graceful?

This morning on Good Morning America I watched President
Bush walk through Biloxi, Mississippi and I couldn't help
but think it was far too little, too late. The leader of
the NAACP said that he thinks that the reason aid isn't
getting to the region quickly is because 99% of those
affected and who couldn't evacuate are African American. I
hate to think there might be some truth in that, but being
of African American decent myself, I can't help but
entertain the idea. I'v faced discrimination in my time,
but this is no time for old feelings to resurface. I guess
back in the 1940's Louisiana had a massive flood and they
rounded up all the black people at gun point and used them
as sandbags to stop the flood waters. I'm not even sure
how that's possible and I don't want to think about it. In
the defense of the government, though. I do admit that
my "people" can be very ignorant and self-destructive. No
matter how bad the situation in New Orleans, they need to
bring out the best in themselves, not the worst. What the
hell is the point of looting an electronics store, when
there isn't any electricity, a house to put it in, and
there won't be for months? Ignorant, I tell you. Well,
that's my current events opinion for the week. I don't
much like talking about current events, but this one is
closer to home for me, since my family is originally from
Louisiana. We date back all the way to the freed slaves
and Native Americans of Louisiana. I suppose you could
say, my history begins there, even though I haven't been
since I was a small child. I still feel as though I've
lost something important.
